AF has a hard time keeping up with the bird and usually focuses on the background mountains.
The Nikon 3D focusing keeps up pretty well with BIF so I use AF. This too requires practice. The camera focusing system - ANY camera focusing system can use all the help it can get from the person behind the camera. Between my practicing and Nikon's really fast focusing, I get lucky ... a lot. Take a look at my shots in the BIF forum of an eagle being harassed. These birds were several hundred yards away and all over the sky.

Another suggestion on aiming is to zoom-out (wide) so you can find the bird, then zoom-in to shoot.
Sometimes I try that, but out here there are so many trees that you only have about a 5 sec window of opportunity by the time you zoom in and out the bird is out of sight. It's a good idea. Thanks again
