Watch HSN Try to Sell a Canon Rebel T3i and Laugh
We as photographers all know better than the average consumer looking to just have a DSLR, but if you're looking for a laugh this afternoon, then you should take a look at the video after the jump featuring the Home Shopping Network...

If you were given the task to sell DSLR cameras to non-photographers, this is EXACTLY how you would need to do it. You need to make operating the camera look fun and quick to learn. You do not want to use photography terms that average people are unfamiliar with. You do not want to overwhelm the potential buyer with endless specifications and datasheet info. This will only make the camera appear too difficult and confusing to use, and ultimately scare the shopper away. Your main objective will be to convince the potential buyer that a DSLR can achieve photos that are not possible with simple cameras.

With the target audience in mind, HSN put together an excellent sales pitch. The only people laughing are photography snobs who do not understand the concept of targeted marketing strategy.

Ouch! Do you provide balm with that burn?

This is about three years old now isn't it? Not exactly a great deal back then.

Then again we don't have the same high expectations for integrity and value from HSN that we are led to believe we get from Congress do we?

Could be funny, or could be rather sad. Sort of like being overly 'photoshopped!'

Only if you order in the next 30 minutes. Operators are standing by, and if you order in the next 15 minutes you also get a month's supply of free film, processing pre-paid!

Yes, full of misinformation, misunderstanding, and outright lies.

Was that a compliment, a criticism, or just an astute observation? :)

Very good Nikonian 72. I just posted exactly what was on Face book and didn't add any of the statements that came with it. Though thinking back to what another poster replied, I must agree there was some similarity to political scenario's, (in my opinion).

Is there any other way to sell a product to people that they don't really need? If the HSN producers attempted to sell DSLR cameras to non-photographers by means of accurate information and full disclosure of facts, they would hardly sell any cameras at all.

Advertising itself is about selling dreams, not realities.
