Hi Everyone - I have recently been thrown into a photography job because I was the "lady with the big camera". I'm doing Horse Show photography and do the Yearbooks for the local horse clubs. I actually love it - but I wish I was better. My first move is to get a FF. My new Photographer colleagues all have switched to Nikon. I'm the last out there with my big white lens. I was wondering is it really worth selling all my Canon gear to make the switch? Are the images that much better with the Nikon?
Are the colors that much better with the D610? Please let me know - THANKS

Using Nikon, Sony, or Canon, you can get outstanding images. The brand is irrelevant. Switching to Nikon (what I've always used) will cost you considerable money, and you will have to learn a new Menu system and new camera controls. Is shooting Canon in the midst of Nikon shooters a problem? If it is, it's because of the Nikon people who are giving you a hard time - not your fault. Do what you want to do, rather than bending to pressure.

If you're seriously considering the D610 or 60D, read reviews and comparisons - more than one. Whatever you decide, you'll be able to recoup part of the expense by selling your current equipment.

Here's a comparison of features.

Welcome to the Hog, Tommie. I agree 100% with Jerrys comments and I am all Nikon and have a D610. Good luck with whatever you decide. ;)

I likewise agree with Jerry's comments. I've carried Minolta/Sony for the last 26 years & haven't used Nikon in almost 50 years when I was a Navy Photographer's Mate. Find what handles most naturally to you, learn the system, dam the torpedos, full speed ahead. You're the 1 shooting the pictures.

I shoot Nikon and frankly I do it because I have an investment in their lenses and bodies. If I had started with Canon, the same would be true. There are differences between the two but not enough to make me want to switch brands.

If you want to improve your craft, post some pictures and get some advice. Find online instructional videos. Learn more about post processing. And practice!

The number of photographers switching to Nikon is amazing. In the 2 years since I opened my camera store I have had 62 walk-in customers trade their Canons for Nikons, and only one customer trade his Nikon for a Canon. (He only had a D7000 and one kit lens and had just gotten engaged to a girl with 9 Canon lenses.....LOL)
Your overall lens investment will probably be the deciding factor. The cameras are physically and financially compatible, the big difference lies in the sensor and processor. Here is a technical comparison to look over:

True. He may be back looking for a Canon lens one of these days! ;)

He did manage to convert her to the OpTech straps though!

That's what marriage is all about - compromise. He gives up his Nikon gear and switches to Canon; she gets a different strap. Typical.

THANKS everyone !! I think I just like to buy cameras and I'm looking for a reason to try something new. I may ebay some junk around my house and try to keep my Canons AND buy some Nikon stuff for fun. Why not - the cameras are don't eat as much as my horses - so it's better than buying another horse!

The above may be true but the cameras won't act silly like a horse does.

Jerry I respect your impartiality. When it comes to prints, you won't be able to distinguish the differences between brands. Gene is another person I respect. When bias is introduced, it's a diminishing factor in credibility and intelligence.

I shoot with a Canon 6D and it is an amazing camera. My hundreds of posts here will prove how good it is.

I'm a novice to low intermediate photographer. Had the Canon T2i and thought I needed a full frame to take better pictures instead of better camera knowledge and experience. I jumped on the D600, it is an incredible camera, I do take better pictures now, and I don't regret the choice in cameras.

BUT, the transition was very tough for a part-time user like me (kids and vacations). The menu system and learning my way around the camera was (and frankly still is) very hard to master. I still have to pick up the manual for what I would consider basics. When I use the T2i, I find the menu system more intuitive and easier to navigate - perhaps it is because I've always used Canon (although I wasn't taking it off auto until a couple of years ago).

I also find the JPGs (yep I know you can do what you want with RAW) out of the Canon more likable when compared directly to the Nikon.

Hope this helps.
