I just received a new macbook pro and I want to replace my old single external hard drive with 2 daisy chained units. Has anyone done this before and can you provide helpful tips and hard drive recommendations.

I have two drives daisy chained using firewire 800 ports on my IMAC - they are seen as two different volumes and work great.

Will also work using Thunderbolt drives if you have a thunderbolt port or USB.

What ports do you have and what were you leaning toward?

I have a Thunderbolt connection on the new iMac pro. My primary objective is to have 2 external hard drives in case one fails. I have a large number of photos that I have collected over the years.

Thunderbolt is very fast. I have my TB monitor and my main external photo drive (also TB) daisy chained (I've tried them in both orders and they seem to be just as fast either way). My backup external (for both the computer and the TB external) has a USB3 connection because I don't really care how fast it backs up, it just does it quietly without bothering me. TB drives are expensive and those with two TB ports (necessary for daisy chaining) are VERY expensive. I'll probably have to add another external to the daisy chain next year if I continue to accrue at the same rate I have over the past 5.

The only hard drive failures I have heard of recently are the ones the IRS uses.
So don't get their brand.

I be liking this 5 TB.

I currently have 9 Lacie external hard drives daisy chained. You can do this if they have their own power supply. I do not know limit on drives powered by computer.
