D610 and auto ISO

Just to let new D610 owners know. There is a auto iso in the menu. And maybe because I bought a refurbished model. It was on. I missed this when I went thru my menu. Probably because everything was new. Went out for some sunrise pics the next morning. The sunrise started putting color about 30 minutes before sunrise. The first 25 images shot at iso 6400 and were obviously very grainy. And not usable. I don't know if there are other cameras that have this in the menu. Hope this helps someone!

Most current cameras include Auto ISO as a choice. For reasons like you mention most do not use it most of time.

One choice the D610 has (that not all cameras do) is that you can use Auto ISO with manual (M) exposure mode. While I don't normally recommend using M mode (I see it as a luddite throwback) this use makes some sense in that you still use the camera's power to get a correct exposure within the limits you have set for Auto ISO.

Note that you also have a menu choice to fix the maximum ISO and minimum shutter speed that your camera will adjust to. If it can't make a satisfactory exposure within those ranges and what you have otherwise set something will blink or flash.

This is a great feature of the D610.

How about using a tripod and setting the ISO to 100. Set to aperture priority(your choice depending on what DOF you want) and let the camera choose the shutter, which will be slow. Use a cable release or built in timer. Zero grain!
Peek at your histogram.
