Nikon D7000 midlife problems fixed

I have a d7000 with 70738 shutter actuations on it that I mainly use for reportage work. Lately it has been acting weird with random hangups/lockups. The quick fix was to turn it off and on which sometimes cleared the jam. Then it took removing the battery from the Nikon battery grip and reinserting. This got to be a PIA when the hangups occurred after about 15 - 20 shots. The real fix was to switch and recharge both Nikon batteries, switch and reformat in camera both SD cards, clean the lens and camera body contacts with a Qtip and rubbing alcohol, and remove and re-install the lens (Sigma 17-50 f2.8 EX HSM) about 10 -12 times. All problems then went away, in fact shot an event last nigh with ~ 370 captures with nary a hiccup!! Life is good again! :) :)

Glad you did not quit on your camera. I hear the Nikon D7000 is pretty good :)

I'm guessing the battery grip is not one of those things that is airtight in its hold upon the camera. If there are electric contacts between the camera and the grip, it could be a problem, particularly when you move the camera in different ways out of sync with the grip.

Been using mine for almost 2 years now, awesome camera, never had an issue. I do, as a rule "reset" all my 4 Nikon bodies every 6 months. I wait for the D7200 which is expected to be announced within the the next couple of weeks, then I will let my D7100 go to a friend.

I too have had problems with focusing and taking shots when the battery grip is attached. Not always, but enough for the wife to start barking! lol

I have had the D7000 for a couple of years now and have never had a single problem with it and use it over my D2x, D70, D300 cameras. I would be interested in knowing if the battery grip you are using is the Nikon grip or a third-party grip as I am thinking about getting a grip. I appreciate the efforts that you went through TKT in resolving your issues with the D7000 as that might be an issue for me in the future.

I forgot to clean the electrical connections between the Nikon battery grip and the camera body - good thing to do next time. Everyone thanks for mentioning grip problems!
