I'm thinking about visiting southern Arizona, based in Phoenix and going to points south. Any suggestions of where to photograph and what popular areas to skip?

If you're headed toward Tucson, Saguaro National Park is a good spot, Mount Lemmon scenic byway. If you like airplanes, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. I haven't been to AZ in 20 years, but wish I had a DSLR back then. Just a few ideas .... Plenty of interesting places in southern Arizona.

Stay in Tucson and cut your travel time by 90 minutes.

I know. That's a good idea, but there's free lodging at my brother-in-law's in Phoenix. We might go out on the road for two or three days.

Try the ICBM Missile launch museum, not far from Tucson and go up to Kit Peak and do a tour of one of the observatories! Look for roadrunners! lol!

All good suggestions -- it's hard to go wrong in Arizona. I would emphasize the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum and add a recommendation for Kitt Peak National Observatory, about 50 miles west of Tucson.

Southeast of Tucson is a little known and infrequently visited place called Choise's (sic) stronghold = a fantastic place to both visit (for it's history) and to photograph. Take food and plenty of water because there is nothing there in the form of human comforts, bhut you will find the place fantastic.

If you are staying in Phoenix, you might spend a sunset at Lost Dutchman State Park, great landscape opportunities, particularly in last light.
