Hi, I just started to shoot RAW and a jpg combo. After loading the photo's into my iphoto library & after some minor processing on the RAW photo I dragged it to my desktop where it somehow ends up with a jpg extension. Can anyone shed some light on this issue & what I may be doing wrong?
Thanks.

You cannot change a raw file. Any edit must be saved as a JPG or TIFF or whatever viewing format that you choose.

It is iPhoto. It does an automatic jpeg conversion of some mysterious type and hides your raw originals deep within an inaccessible library file. If you want to get a raw photo out of iPhoto, you can export it and choose "original" as the file type in the export dialogue box.

Though I am a die hard mac person, I do not like iPhoto as a raw editor. I don't ever let iPhoto touch my raw files, I download them in Image Capture and edit them in Lightroom.

Thanks so much for the quick reply on my 1st ever post ! I just tried the export, as you suggested, of "original" file & it came out with an "NEF" extension (& the full raw MB's) which I believe is Nikon for RAW. Cheers!

NEF = Nikon Electronic File, which is a Nikon proprietary raw file.

Just curious, after you process and adjust a RAW picture in iPhoto, why do you drag it to your desktop?

If I'm planning to email or upload a photo to FB, I've found it easier to find on my desktop (after I've labelled it) than opening up & looking for it in my iphoto maze. If there's a more efficient way, I'm all ears :) .
