I ran across this article, first I have heard of a camera specifically designed for astrophotography from Nikon.

Yes I have read about cameras that have a wider range of light sensitivity.

The three Nikons in the article need to be able to attach to a telescope thus need to be able to take the lense off.

The middle compact camera looks though its a fixed lense.

Not ideal for serious star photos.

I have shown the attached photo (Orion Nebula) in another topic, so forgive me...

While the D810 is great for it's low light capability I don't think it is a good choice for astrophotography. I'd much prefer the D5300 because of it's infrared release, fully articulated screen, and use of the illuminated readable active info screen vs. fumbling around for buttons in the dark.

The articulated screen is necessary if you plan to use the camera on a telescope. It is highly desirable if you are using it on a tripod for Milky Way photos. You don't have to stand on your head to use it.

The remote release connection on all the D8xxs sucks. It is a threaded connection that you can't hardly work because the camera body interferes with your fingers.

I know this because I did some Milky Way shots last summer with my D800 and thought it a kludge compared to my prior use of my D5100. My D5300 is in the mail.
