Up until now I have used Lightroom exclusively for all my photographic needs. I spent a lot of time watching tutorials (paid and free) on how to use it. I could do the same with Photoshop but I don't want to get that crazy with it. I am looking for a good tutorial for beginners to get me started from those that have tried many like I have for Lightroom. My plan is to use it when advanced Pixel changing editing is needed or for things like focus stacking for Macro or Multi exposure HDR photos.

I am interested in 12, not 13 because I got it for $30 with a camera purchase.

PSE only supports 8 bit images - Photoshop is 16 bit. If you plan on getting into HDR, focus stacking and Multiple exposure you are limiting yourself by using a system that only manipulates in 8 bit vs 16 bit.

PSE 12 is also replaced by 13, so you are looking at a limited life and no updates as 13 moves farther into the future.

There are many good videos on PSE. But as far as instructor's go, for the beginner, I think Rick Peterson is very good. Here is the URL:
rick@essential-photoshop-elements.com work

I'm sure there will be others here that will send you in other good directions as well. Thanks, Boone.

Well I just bought PS12 last year before I even knew about 13, and that is a huge purchase for me for a program I use about 0-1x in a year's time, pretty much never. I was signed up with lynda dot com and those tutorials helped me to actually learn a tiny bit after benign unable to "get it" with anything from anywhere else (YouTube videos were too fast paced and not broken down enough) . Anyway , I reccomend lynda dot come as it helped me learn the very first step in "layers" . The only problem is since Im so extremely busy with my every day life I forget what I learn and have to go back and study it for a whole entire day or two in order to be able to do a first layer , correctly, again. And that is just playing around and experimenting . Not even actually accomplishing much. I don't have an entire day or two of time to sit at the computer to learn (plus my computer is very slow and a little outdated because I can't afford a new one). If you ask why would it take so long to learn one tiny thing , I have a.d.d. And either have a very hard time concentrating or get so hyper focused I am at it for hours on end before I realize how much time has passed. This means I have to get a babysitter for my youngest and clear my schedule , among other things.
So my question is does lynda.com still offer tutorials for elements 12, now that 13 is out ? I might want to sign back up with them but not for a long while , like maybe 6-12 months +

So that is why every time I uploaded a photo into PSE it wouldn't let me do anything until I changed it to 8 bit ! Which was a hassle because I couldn't figure how to do that either without some playing around for a while.
I have PS6 on a disc , if I ever learned to use that would it support 16bit files? Right now it's not an option as its way too hard and I have no clue what to do with anything , with PS6, and no I can't afford regular PS. So stuck using LR 5 for now.

10.00 a month for full blown photoshop and full blown Lightroom is not a bad deal at all.

If you are talking aboutCS6, yes, 16 bit and some 32 bit.

Wow that is not bad . but it would be an additional 25 (being signed up with lynda.com since that's what works for me for learning) making it 30 a month for me personally until I learned enough to use the program.

Plenty of free tutorials on Adobe TV, YoutUBE and other places on the internet.

I would also suspect that 90% of your edits would be completed within Lightroom, going to Photoshop only every now and then until you get your skills in Photoshop boosted, then things may change.

Lightroom, once you get past the catalog concept, is fairly easy to grasp.

I have no problem with lightroom ;-). It's photoshop and youtube , free tutorials don't work for me. I will just re sign up with lynda.com if I sign up for the 10. A month photo shop subscription :) thanks.

Thanks for the advice on the 16 bit and full version of PS. I knew about that 9.99 deal but I didn't know that it was a 16 vs 8 version (in elements). Ok then, how does this sound. I use the photoshop 12 elements to start learning the basics of the program (layers, etc) and then when my version of Lightroom needs to be updated with a new purchase (I would imagine that is coming because I have had it a long time now) , I go with the 9.99 a month for the two programs. Has anyone heard when a major version change is coming for Lightroom?? Is making the jump from 12 to the full version going to be difficult (if I decide to learn on 12)?

That sounds like a good plan, that's the way that I did it.

The way that you do things in pse , for the most part, will be same for ps. You may want to check out
Anthony Morganti , anthonymorganti.com, he does tuts for lr, pse, and ps

Basically I went thru the same scenario - I was an Apple Aperture user, added PSE 8 and went to PSE 10, 11 and 12 before Aperture bit the dust and I switched to Lightroom and Photoshop CC bundle. The experience using PSE made the switch to Photoshop much easier for me.

After looking at Lightroom I am confused now. Under preferences in the external editing tab, it has it set up for photoshop elements as 16 bit/component, Prophoto RGB, TIFF, Resolution=240. Why is it set for this if elements can only do 8 bit color space????
