Unreps in the South China Sea.

I've had some interaction on this site with some of my Brothers in Arms, so I thought I'd post this, thinking they might enjoy it. I shot this while in a helicopter, flying loiter duty during underway replenishments. My ship, the USS Ticonderoga (CVA14) and the Brinkley Bass (DD-887)
were taking on fuel from the USS Passumpsic (AO107) . This was in 1966, during the early days of the Vietnam war, during the bombing of Hanoi and Haiphong and the mining of their harbors.

Boy! That REALLY brings back memories! While you were in the Pacific, I was riding the replenishment ships USS Alstede (AF-48), and USS Concord (AFS-5) in the Mediterranean. I was an enlisted Signalmen in those days (later got a commission and retired as an LCDR), and ComSixthFleet had ordered all underway replenishments be conducted in "radio silence" - which meant we semaphore flag boys and flashing light ditty-boppers took the full brunt of all messages sent and received by the ships in company.

Wow, Bob.... unreps with total radio silence is a dangerous endeavor, to say the least! Why did they so such a thing?

I served on the USS Tolovana (AO 64) in '62 to '64. I recall unreps quite well. I started handling lines and eventually wound up running the high line winch on the JP5 station.

Thank you for the compliment. One of my favorite things was to fly loiter duty. Yes, it is best viewed in the download format. You can get a much better idea of just what a complicated conglomeration of machinery it all was. And to realize that 80% of the personnel aboard were under 20 years old!

I want to thank all of you for your service to our fine country. I wish there was a website for veterans to talk to each other and get things off their chests. So many of you had lost a lot of friends during these wars.
