We have been lucky this year with our sightings of these beautiful owls. Well worth the 200 plus mile trip. When we went back out I took a "Ranging 610" and was surprised that the distance of this shot was 130 yards. Now I know why "birders" want 600mm lenses.

That's an old drilling rig parked in a field. Here's the first one taken there this year.

Thanks Marilyng, look for them sitting on the ground and if you have snow they'll be very hard to find. They will perch on poles or anything high to give them an advantage hunting. I've never seen one sitting in a tree. Good luck...Ron

Thanks Flathead, I looked last year and found none but it's been good this year. I was about 130 to 140 yards away shooting a 300mm f/2.8 with a 2x extended with a 1.6 crop camera. Trying to make up my mind about a 500 f4.0 or the 600mm f/4.0. I watch birders that loose a bird because they can't find it fast enough in the finder. Another thing, there's a big difference in cost between the two. Seems I can't get close enough to the birds but I also don't want to get that close to the bears that I also photograph. I'm sure that a Flathead ford doesn't power your avatar, nice shot!...Ron

LOL, I hear ya about the bears. I was trying to get a shot of one until I heard one in the bushes to my right. Didn't know there were 2 of them. Slowly backed up. And no, there wouldn't be a flathead engine in the P-40. Street Rods are my other favorite pastime. :-) Cheers.

Thanks, this is the first year that I have been able to find them. In the past I have been so bust photographing the Bald Eagles in CdA ID this time of the year. This was not a good year for the eagles so we had time to look for something else. Not easy to find but now we will know where to look next year and we will split our time between both birds....Ron

Jan, I really like your eagle shots!! Owls are so hard to find but I'll spend 4 to 5 hours on one when we find them. Both the owls and eagles arrive here at about the same time of year and the eagles are so easy to find and photograph. When are you going to get that 1.4 TC? Remember that when you do get one that at first it may seem harder to find that bird. I'm envious that you shoot free hand but when you get old like "imagemeister " and me you may end up with a mono-pod or even a tripod. I've got to find out what is the magic time to post so that it stays up all day, My post last on the main page for only about 1/2 hour if I'm lucky. I see the same peoples shot all the time. I now do most of my posting elsewhere. I'm/we all glad to see your shots!
