I am taking a trip to Las Vegas in a week and am looking for some opinions. I have been to the Dam, Red Rock, Vally of Fire, Grand Canyon and Mt. Charleston. That said, I feel like I just touched the surface of all of them. I would like to take a few hikes and get to some of the more prime locations.
I am thinking of doing an Airplane/helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon, and a hike in Valley of Fire and up to one of the many Mt. Charleston trails.
Anyone who has specifics on those; info would be appreciated. Better alternatives are welcome too!
Thanks everyone! This is such a great source of information!
We were there in 2007. Rented a car and went down Rt 66 in Arizona. It was a good day trip.
Death Valley is an easy 1 hour drive from Vegas. I was there in March
Of '98 and the Valley was in foll bloom.
must of flew if you got to death valley in 1 hour, good place to go though, red rock and valley of fire are good . You can head north to Cathedral Gorge State Park a couple of hours away outside of Caliente on us 93, If you have the time you can head up to Zion
Don't foget Zion NP and Bryce Canyon. Look at images through Google prior to making your decision. Gary

Not sure if you have access to a 4 wheel drive, if you do I might suggest going to Little Finland also know as Devils Fire. Not far from Vegas. Check it out on the net. I have posted a couple of pictures on here. It will help you if you have a GPS to locate the area.

You said that you've done Red Rock and Valley of Fire....but at the different times of year you might get different scenery. South of Hoover Dam is the new BIG bridge...just opened. I haven't even been there yet.
Outside of town, there are a couple of biker bars that I like to ride to. One, Mountain Springs Saloon, is at the top of Mt. Ptosi on hwy 160. The other, Pioneer Saloon, has been there since 1913. It's the oldest known operating "tin" building in the US. Has Bullet holes in the wall and has a Back Bar made of hand carved cherry wood from the 1800's.
There is also Death Valley about 1 1/2 hours away. Many ghost towns within a couple of hours.
Don't forget the obvious...many photo ops with all of our diverse architecture...New York, Paris, Venice, Castles, etc...
If you take about an hour hike into Red Rock at Pine Creek Canyon, you'll find a couple of waterfalls. Be careful getting there, as it requires alot of rock scrambling.
Let me know if you need more!
Oh...and, be sure to visit the casinos....our economy needs a boost!
If you want to shoot landscapes in Las Vegas, check out Frenchman Mountain which some people call Sunset mountain. As you climb, you can shoot the entire LV strip in one or two shots! It also overlooks Nellis AFB, and you can get some neat airplane photos. Another good place downtown is the Neon Museum (
www.neonmuseum.org/) . You need to make reservations and pay a fee. It costs more if bring a tripod or an expensive camera, so look like an amateur when you go. If you ever watch CSI, they have shot there, along with other TV shows. Up that same end of town is the Stratosphere Tower at 1149 feet. Amazing views! Lots of parking garages on the strip have panoramic views, for free.

I agree with the parking garages.
I got some great shots of fireworks at the Paris from the parking garage at Bellagio, across the street. Speaking of which....the Belaggio fountains and atrium.
I forgot about Sunrise Mountain!
There are just so many places....I get upset with myself when I don't take my camera with me.
The Las Vegas Temple (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) is beautiful day or night. If you like night shooting, there is a 50% off deal for a helicopter tour of the strip if you log onto
www.groupon.com. Also, north of Las Vegas sits a community called Overton with some "yesteryear" feel to it. There are some interesting buildings, a wildlife reserve (birds) and some ranches with horses and livestock throughout the area. A little farther north is St. George, Utah (apx 2hrs. 20 min.), it has another beautiful Temple, gorgeous buildings and an outdoor amphitheater. Best wishes, enjoy your journey! WSL
I agree with Vinnya. Zion is not that far and has spectacular photo ops.

On our last trip to Vegas, we got started on Death Valley and the Mojave Desert. Both of these are impressive (much more than I would have ever thought). There are some great photo ops in these and no crowds. There is another canyon that is interesting on the way to Zion. It is Kolob Canyon Park and actually is adjacent to Zion. Kolob Road takes off HWY 9 at the town of Virgin and cones out at Cedar Canyon on HWY 14 on the North end. It has some very interesting scenery and is not crowded. We didn't go the entire length of the road but will consider it the next trip. Pictures of all of these areas are on my website:
http://www.photosbyswede.com. Have a good trip!

I have seen this area from the freeway a few times, but never went there. Great Idea!
Thanks for the info and the photo link. That clears up a lot! Thanks
