I purchased a Tamron 18-270 mm lense approximately a year ago. It attaches to a Canon 7D. It takes good pictures but the problem is that when I carry it over my shoulder the lense extends out from the 18mm to the 270 mm all by itself. I have contacted Tamron concerning this and they say to send it in and they would look at it. Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this and is there any other way of getting it fixed other than shipping it back to them. Thanks!!

My wife uses this lens on her Nikon D50 and have never had a problem. Your problem must be your particular lens. I loved the lens before she took it away from me.

Uh, nope. Don't have that copy.
But my 150-600mm has a little slide lock to keep Big Tammy retracted.
I think it is a characteristic of Tamron tele lenses to self extend.

You throw it over your shoulder? :hunf:

Try putting a fat rubber band on it. Cheap, quick fix.

I haven't said it in years now....
But whenever mine asked me to do something for her, my reply was often, "I'll take it out in trade."
I'm not sure how long it would take to payback a lens at 25 cents a pop.

Why don't you lock it?

I have the same problem but use the lock provided on the lens.

Thanks for the replies. I will probably start using the lock instead of sending it in. Just afraid I will forget to unlock it when I get there and miss a shot. When you get my age, you tend to forget some things.

Anytime I forget to unlock my Big Tammy, it reminds me when I take hold of the zoom.
Just lock it when traveling. ;)

I also have this type of lens for about two months now. I have no problems so far.

Must be a Canon thing, no problems with my three Nikons.

I have the same lens. I had the same problem. I had the additional problem that the autofocus stopped working. I contacted them and found that my warrantee was still in effect. I sent them the lens and they fixed it in a week, no charge. The lens is nice and tight and does not extend by itself any more. And the autofocus works.

I have that exact lens. When not in use I lock it. The lens creep is never a problem otherwise unless I have it on a tripod shooting down at something. In that case I keep one of those fancy lens creep rubber bands on the zoom collar. You can use a cheap rubber band but the fancy one is black, cheap and it works. (http://lensband.com/)

I've had that lens for 3-4 years and love it. It rarely leaves my T3i. I also had the problem with lens creep. Yes, locking it solves the problem, but as you said, you may miss a shot when forgetting to unlock it. I contacted Tamron, sent it in, and had the barrel tightened in a few days. As previously stated, the barrel is now nice and tight, works great. Good luck.
