One of the first few images with my Tokina 100mm Macro, and first try with off-camera speedlight. Set my SB-600 up to the side and went into commander mode.
Hand-held shot. I know focus is off slightly at the tip. Ended up just below the tip, but am pleased with the outcome so far.
Maybe a ring light is on my list for a purchase soon ;)

I think you will do better with a $15 6x8-inch softbox diffuser.

I concur. Perhaps a little more bulky, but the results are worth it.

Interesting. I have had one of those for some time now, but never really got a chance to use it.
I started with a small Sunpak speed light and the softbox never really fit it well at all, so it sat. Just dug it out and it does fit the SB-600 better, so will give it a try. Thanks for the tip!
Edit: Letting it sit on the SB-600 hopefully to stretch it out a bit and get a better fit.

Three points:
1.) For 2-years, I used a 6x8-inch softbox diffuser on an SB-600 speedlight. Photo below;
2.) You need to "inflate" the softbox to allow light to reach the softbox corners. Read more here (near bottom of thread):

3.) To even the light within the softbox:
a.) set SB-600 to Manual output,
b.) deploy drop-down diffuser (which will set light pattern to widest (14-mm);
c.) INSIDE the softbox, stretch the internal white cloth from one side to the other, using Velcro button to hold in place.

All I need to make my setup work is that item that lets you set your speed lite on an angle I don't know the name or part number of it. In your photo Nikonian72 its the silver thing holding your speedlight. TKs REJ.
I like that needle point and composition.
