A different little flower from a weed

I took a walk to see if any new ducks had arrived in our park but as normal I always look for other shots. I found these little flowers and went back to the house for my Macro Lens and D5300. I took the advice I got from yesterday's shot by increasing the ISO and decreasing the aperture.

This brings up a question: If I take a shot with my 60MM Macro lens using MFD, and I crop it, which in turn does zoom it, does that then disqualify it as Macro 1:1 photography.

D5300 60MM Macro, f16, 1/640 sec, ISO-1000

NO!
True macro-photography STARTS at 1:1 mag, but a photographer can achieve much higher magnification with proper optics &/or proper editing.

"MICRO-Photography" or Photo-Micrography starts at 10:1 mag, because 10x is usually the least magnification on a microscope.

Well that brings up a different question, let's say, I shoot a shot using MFD to get the size of a subject at 1:1, could I not then move back and allow auto focus to take the helm, and crop in to at least the shot using MFD?

Yes! And one advantage is slightly deeper DoF. Many photographers (including me) shoot just a bit farther back (wider Field-of-View) than wanted, which allows a bit more latitude when cropping in PP. Remember, printing to 5x7, 8x10, and 13x19-inch formats will each require different dimensions from original, so a bit of excess border is nice to have available.

I will need to try to remember that as I think it will be awhile before I think any of my work is worth a print.
