It has proven to be an unmitigated disaster since I did so two weeks ago. Power Point has stopped working properly in the midst of lecture prep. This after two weeks of working though not quite as fast.

I have Yosemite on my iMac and it works beautifully. It is fast, simple and effective. You must have done something wrong. My version is 10.10.2.

Same here, works perfectly.
I have had no problems at all.

Could depend on which MAC you are running.

Yeah right... I have been running Yosemite since it came out... currently I sit at 10.10.2
ZERO issues, ZERO problems.... so much for that ;)
Runs plenty fast on my IMAC.... every upgrade on the Imac has been easy, fast and without problems, don't know why you got screwed up, but I suspect you are wrong for blasting Yosemite.
Edit:
Actually, am running Yosemite on 2 Mac Mini's, 2 Imacs, 3 Macbook AIRS.... piece of cake to install and operate. NO problems.
Run LibreOffice on all but 1 IMAC, that has MS Office 2011.
Lightroom and Photoshop CC on my Imac, no issues.
Very happy with performance.
I've had lots of issues since updating. PowerPoint locking up repeatedly and and not saving recovery files when it does. All three of my Macs are operating at about half speed compared to pre-update...and it gets noticeably slower with each new program opened. Efficient simultaneous processing is impossible. Even shut down and start up are slow, SLOW,
SSSSSSLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOWWWWW. And my wife has had no end of problems with changes being made to her GMAIL access that she hasn't made. There are some things I like about Yosemite, but the move has not been positive overall.
I have 4 Macs and they are all doing great (iMac & 3 MacBook Pros) (20GB, 16GB, 8GB & 4GB)

What mac are you using? Mine is a iMac Retina 5K 27inch. 3.5 GHz Intel core i5, 3TB Fusion drive (120GB SSD) 32 GB memory. I have no problem with any of my software.

All are MacBook Pro's 15" 2.5 GHz 4GB memory

Me, too. Only issue was dropping wifi, and that's been fixed.
