Critique appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My club set up a mentoring night, and these were on one table.

I really like it. It looks like a painting. The only comment I have is cropping out some of the black. However, this is from one who only aspires to take such a photograph.

Thanks! How much of the black would you suggest to be cropped?
Do you think the eyes focus on the pitcher's handle, the embroidery, or something else?

I actually feel negative space works in this image, at least in my subjective point of view. I think your focus could have been sharper. On the download, it is quite soft, especially the embroidery. Good exposure. The concept of a photog club, and setting up a mentoring night is intriguing to me. How does that work?

The pitcher looks like it has pp such as poster edges. I like how it looks. The towel is a bit out of focus and doesn't seem to have any special effect. Not sure if the contrast between the two works for me.

I like the amount of black around; any cropping would feel cramped. And the placement within the frame of black is pleasing. I wish there were just the slightest hint of a table under the basin to kind of anchor it in place :)

Very much appreciate your comments. The pitcher does have poster edges. In order to bring out the colors on the embroidery, I burned (?) each stitch. Maybe the embroidery is out of focus because I was concentrating on the pitcher, or maybe because I wasn't using a tripod and my hands shake.

When you say you're not sure if the contrast between the two might not work, do you mean because one has poster edges and the other is out of focus, or do you mean that the two items themselves don't go together. They were both placed this way on a black velvet cloth that draped the top and the bottom. I think you're right. If there had been a wooden table with the pitcher and bowl placed on the embroidery, the setting would have looked more authentic. Fun night, anyway. Thanks for looking and commenting.

Hi, OriginalCyn! I do have to work on my focusing. Should try to get the tripod out and use it more often. Trying to learn one apparatus at a time. Will get back to you with an answer to your questions ASAP. Thanks for looking and your comments.

Yes, that one has poster edges and one doesn't. I think the towel's softer focus wouldn't be as noticeable if the other elements "matched" that effect. Could always soften the whole composition :)

So neat you have a group with challenges and interesting photo shoots like this!

Hi, Linda From Maine. I had tried poster edges on the entire photo first, and it really didn't work on the embroidery.

I selected the embroidery, tried to sharpen it via pp, and also used more contrast. Do you think it's better? Just downloaded it. Still out of focus. Sigh.

Actually, now that it looks a bit grainy, I think it matches better :)
