Looking for a sample image with a Nikon 105mm f/2.8 AI-s + Nikon FX

Anyone shooting with this combination? Nikon 105mm f/2.8 Al-s + Nikon FX

I wanted to see a few macro images. I'm trying to figure out if making a change to FX is going to help improve my macro images.

I'm pondering three different directions:
1. FX body
2. Lens change
3. Canon 6D + MP-E

It's funny how these bug pictures get me thinking about making a change. Otherwise, I'm totally happy with my D7000.

screwing a used D7100 to that Nikkor 105/2.8 makes a nice cheap setup.

That's what I use. Love to try an FX...just not in my budget right now.

Using a Micro-Nikkor 105-mm Ai-s on an FX camera will NOT change your magnification (compared to a DX camera), but it will increase your Field-of-View. This 30-year old lens on either a DX or an FX camera will produce 1:2 magnification (1/2 life-size) at MFD. 52-mm of extension tube will provide 1:1 mag. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/105mm-f28.htm#spex

A Nikkor 105 lens projects the purple circle. A DX sensor sees less of the projection than an FX sensor.

I do understand magnification with my setup. It's the sharpness and noise that I want to improve. I do feel that I can handle going higher than 2:1, which is why the Canon might be an option. The 105 lens I currently have was dropped at some point and has damage to the filter threads so I can't reverse a lens onto the end. All that got me to the point of thinking about another 105 macro lens, but I want to look into what other options I have to improve my images.

The lens dictates 'sharpness', while the sensor & selected ISO dictate noise. It is a common comment from high pixel full frame camera users upgrading from APS-C sensor cameras, that noise reduction is quite apparent.

I don't have the Nikon 105, but do have the Sigma 105. I just got a FX camera and really like the noise control that Nikon has in their newer models. I also shoot the 7100 which "seems" to hold up to slightly more aggressive cropping than the 800e. If I had to pick only one between the two....well....I wouldn't want to have to. You would likely see a big improvement with the 7100 over the 7000, especially for macro simply from the extra pixels'

It's my understanding that the newer Nikons have outstanding noise control.

6D and an MP-E 65 is a wicked combo. Canon is getting ready to release the 5D-IV 50MP, prices on the 5D-III are going to drop significantly when this happens. 5D-III and MP-E 65 is a super sweet field rig.
