Going to Hawaii in June have a D800 and Nikon 24-70 70-200 and 14-24 all 2.8 thinking of leaving the 24-70 at home due to weight and theft worries, am I making a mistake or not. Any good out of the way photo ops in Maui, Kauai, and the big island? Also my wife is looking at a new camera choices the Sony DSC RX10 or a Canon G model any thoughts on either one?
thanks

If it were me, I'd bring it all if it fits in one bag.
You're going to see many, grand views!
Are you renting a car on each island?
I used Former's or Fador's as a guide for scenic drives on each island and thought it worked out vey well. You can hit each island and already know where you are going.

You purchased a great camera and great glass so that you could get the best possible images, and you are going to a very beautiful place that would enable you to use your best lenses to greatest effect.

Traveling is about new experiences, and new experiences, while exciting and attractive, are also intimidating and a little scary (at least for me). So, here's the question. How objectively risky is your destination?

If I were going to Honduras, I'd have misgivings about bringing my best gear. Hawaii, in contrast, is probably safer than were you current live. Why not compare crime statistics and put your mind at ease?

Having said all that, I should add that I like travelling very light. I really like shooting with my Zeiss F35mm prime (Sony A7, full frame), and if I come across a shot for which I need a wider view, I have had very good results using Panorama Stitch. Still, I could see using a 24mm in some circumstances where Panorama Stitch wouldn't work. In other words, the 24-70 would meet all of my needs, and I would leave behind the more specialized 14-24. But that's just me.

Agree....take them all. I know the 24-70 is heavy, but it you leave it behind, you will be asking "why did I do that". I usually take my 10-22, 24-70 and the 70-200. Why be caught short for a few pounds. Question is do you have a bag/case that will hold all in one along with batteries, flash and carrying slings. Don't forget the tripod and an extra card or two. Have a good trip.

I went to Kauai a couple of years ago, taking every piece of glass I own. I was very thankful that I did. I do not think you can minimize, with the variety of scenery you are liable to see, throughout the trip. And as far as theft goes, the one place I know you need to be careful is at the beach. A tremendous amount of that activity takes place over there by crooks watching for people heading down to the beach from parking lots that can be some distance away. I made sure that I put anything of value in the trunk of the car when stopping at a grocery store or gas station, then drove to the beach. That way, no one at the beach ever saw me put anything in the trunk.

We spent 10 days on Oahu back in Oct. Drove all over the island. Took a couple of helicopter tours. My 16-35 and 24-105 were the lenses I used 99% of the time. Wider was definitely handier then longer. You'll most likely miss your 24-70 if you don't take it. I wouldn't worry about a tripod. I didn't take my tripod or monopod and didn't miss them. See your insurance agent and get a policy to cover your gear so that you don't have to worry about theft, loss, damage, etc. Such policies are relatively cheap and provide great peace of mind. Your homeowner's policy typically does not cover personal items outside the home.

We have been to those islands and this is what I could recommend: Maui-drive up to Haleakala National Park and view the beautiful crater, Kauai take a sunset dinner cruise up the Napli coast line ...only way to see it is from water/air or drive up to Waimea Canyon...big island of Hawaii I would take in Volcano's National Park....rather desolate place with the old lave flows but very interesting. There are so many photo ops available on these islands but we enjoyed these very much. Enjoy your trip. 8-)

Take all you have. Photo ops everywhere you look. Google Hawaii photography and all kinds of sites will appear. Be sure to hit all the tourist attractions...they are worth it.

Went to Hawaii a couple years ago. Did not have a "wide angle" lens. Have one now. Wish I did then!! Every where you go is a wide angle view. While on Maui take the road to Hana. It is an all day trip. The views and water falls are breath taking. I agree with Nascar27, On Kauai, The Napoli coast dinner cruise is the way to go. Have a wide angle lens!!!
