You know, if you step on one it's easier to keep the whole spider tangent to the lens.
;-)

This is the first black widow I have seen in California. At my home in Colorado there were a lot of them in my mud porch and they were all a very shiny black. This one seemed to be somewhat bigger than the ones in Colorado as well.

Dennis, as Douglass pointed out, this is a Brown Widow. Black Widows are...well...black  Also, these are becoming very common. They seem to be everywhere now a days. I thought I read somewhere that the population of Brown Widows is exploding.

Sorry, Bill, I had missed Douglass post somehow. Not enough coffee yet. I didn't know there was a brown widow spider. I was about to call it a brown black widow spider but decided that would not be appropriate.

Thanks, Douglass, for letting me know. As I told Bill I never knew there was such a thing as a brown widow. Now I know.

I chose not to step on it. However let there be no mistake. I did kill it and will kill anything venomous either in the house or on my property. I have a 6 year old granddaughter and would not want her to be bit by one of these things. Actually me or my wife either.

I've actually raised some Black Widow spiderlings several years back...They escaped when the wind blew over the container & knocked off the lid to it. (had it outside on my porch)

My first photos of a Brown Widow spider, recorded in September 2010.
"It seems that a new species, the Brown Widow (Latrodectus geometricus), has been moving west from Florida, over the last several years, and is now established in the Los Angeles area. The Brown Widow (L. geometricus) is suspected to have the least severe bite of the Widow family (it is considered to possibly be medically insignificant). It is suspected that the brown widow is either more hesitant to bite, or the amount of venom injected (a process called envenomation) is less than the amount injected by its cousins. Males and immatures do not bite. The brown widow is an extremely timid spider which has rarely been reported to bite. Brown widow spiders usually curl up into a ball, and drop to the ground as a primary defense. bugguide.net/node/view/23403
It has been observed, but not explained, that the Brown widow population in Southern California has increased, while the Black Widow population has decreased. cc.bingj.com/cache.aspx?q=brown+widow+displace+black+wido...
