Using a 300mm lens I focussed on the BMW number plate.

The car was approximately 300 feet from the camera, but the bush which appears to be behind the number plate and the car lamps was at least 10 feet nearer to me.

Can anyone offer an explanation as to why the bush appears behind the plate and the lamps appear in front of the bush?

It appears that you are getting the "looking through" effect (like when you shoot through a chain link fence and it mostly disappears)

The branches are still there in front of the license plate but they are faint; notice that the two branches on the left are sort of "translucent"?

i don't have a clue...I am not a physicist. My explanation is that you are shooting behind a pain of glass and your camera's lens picked up the glasses reflection of the bush.

My question is, what was the inspiration to take the photo? What's all the green mess in the very foreground? Without the light bending anomaly, this would normally be deleted immediately after the download. What was it that caused you to spend anytime with this photo, to have you discover this oddity?

Yes, I'm curious too, as to what caused what we are looking at but unless I spotted this illusion in less than a split second, it would have been deleted and would have never had this much fun with such a junk photo. [smile]

I can see the branch going through the license plate, as you would expect, not behind it. Look closely.

The branch is close enough to you that the long optics are almost completely focusing out the branch. The white license plate makes the portion of the branch in front of the plate appear to be missing, and fools the brain into seeing it as behind the license plate.

Very simple explaination: You Photoshopped the branch behind the plate and are tricking us all.

I don't get the question. I saw the bush as being in front of the car. I think you are having a "where your eye focuses" issue. There are several optical illusions where staring at different parts of the picture gives the illusion of different images.
