So, just getting back from MWC and I saw something that could be very dangerous in the wrong hands.
Nokia's latest phone ( believe it or not) is more than your average phone!
I posted a quick review if anyone wants to take a gander, but I'll full you in with some general details to wet the pallet.
Remember this is a phone...
Nokia 808 Pureview camera features: 44.1 Megapixel camera with a decent size sensor to boot. Lens glass design by Carl Zeiss. Prime wide angle f2.4. Camera raw capabilities, full HD video at 30fps in 1080p. Beautiful in camera picture!
While I was able to see it, I have yet to play. The final file sizes were pretty small, so I do wonder what the compression rate is. I know the topic of phone capture and Iphonography are not the favorites, but take a look at the link, I'm interested to see what others here think!

You're sure that's not a typo? 44.1 Megapixel??? The sensor can't be physically all that big - the pixel density would be ridiculous... perhaps it's a 4.1?
Sorry to be skeptical, I can see someone throwing in a 16 Mp camera or the like but to jump into the 40's.... doesn't seem realistic...

But it only runs Symbian! Whats the purpose?
While the main purpose seems to be a "My phone is better than your 5D!" (kidding! Kind of!) I saw some great potential in this beast! However it does sit at roughly $700. The images I saw were awesome as was the video capability. The main concern was the file size if a full Rez image at around 10mb per shot. For something that large with that much definition, I imagine that it's dealing with the most amazing compression codec yet to be discovered, or there is a large rate of destructive compression that I didn't see. Either way, it is one more way to create which is always good right? Lol!
But from what I saw, I was both impressed and scared.
I am gonna have to see it to believe it. And I want to know, who makes the sensor in Nokia's phone?

I read an article once that was titled "Not all Mega Pixels are the same." Wish I could find it now as it would explain why this isn't that big of a deal.

From the review:
"The 41-megapixel sensor takes image data from seven neighboring pixels and consolidates it into one pixel's worth generating pictures roughly 5 megapixels in size."
Whatever that means.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
The 41-megapixel sensor takes image data from seven neighboring pixels and consolidates it into one pixel's worth generating pictures roughly 5 megapixels in six.
Maybe someone can interrupt this It sounds as if it is a 5mp to me.
I'm not judging the validity of what this camera/phone may or may not do. What needs to be taken into account is that technology is changing VERY rapidly....so something like this shouldn't be all that amazing. In fact, this makes me think about Bose and what it did for the music speaker industry. I used to own some 250 watt speakers that had a great sound but were gigantic in size. At about the same time, here comes Bose offering this tiny little 2x3x5 box that produced the same, if not better, quality of sound than the 3-foot tall speakers! Lesson learned...miniaturization is here to stay and it's also bringing amazing quality along with it.
I better cancel my D800...;(

They do seem to have some type of pixel approximator in place for some file consolidation. The averaging was a bit confusing, but the results did speak for themselves. They are using real pixels to interprete data as opposed to general averaging.
And the video uses the effective and popular H.264 compression rate. The thing that got me was the definition that they have in their "zoom/crop" feature. Put this in a skilled hand, and it could be very interesting!
sounds like it is a 5mp size when finished. I was wondering about the 41mp in a phone. Think I'll keep my DSLR, after all this is a phone.
