Anybody own a Manfrotto 057 RC4 and what do you think?

I think it would be a mistake. I have the RC4 QR on my 410 geared head, and it's a pain. I put an ARCA plate on it and use ARCA QR plates on camera/lenses with it. I haven't looked into it yet, but will switch out the QR for an ARCA plate (if I can). Did that on one of my old Vanguards, which I bought before I got well into ARCA.
I like the old RC2; smaller and quick in/out. Use them for smaller setups. I especially like them on my monopods; use the swivel/tilt head on them.

I dismissed it because of the proprietary plate. I'd have to attach an Arca-Swiss compatible clamp, and when you add that to the price, you'd be looking at the price of an Arca Swiss, Markins, RRS, Kirk, or other premium ball head with a standard Arca-Swiss clamp.
I have a Manfrotto 057 RC4 and it never gets used any more since I got a UniqBall UBH 45 Ball Head. The UniqBall is a FANTASTIC Ball head.

I prefer the RRS gear. In addition to that, I would strongly suggest that you contact MT Shooter at Camera Cottage and see what he suggests. If you are unaware, he is a regular here with a small photography business. He is well known for his great advice and excellent prices and has a pretty wide stock, new and used, of these sorts of things.
