I was wondering if anyone could recommend a reasonably priced Studio type flash unit. I'd want it to have a modeling lamp, a user replaceable flash tube, and cost less than $200.
Am I dreaming?

Consider looking at Adorma's own brand 'Flashpoint' I have their 300 and 600 W lights and they work great! The 300 W is probably plenty of power.

The problem you are going to see with cheap lights is lack of power and color temperature consistency. The least expensive light I would recommend would be the Paul C. Buff Alien Bees:

High quality, good color consistency, amazingly good customer service. The 160ws is just slightly over your budget, and the 320ws is $280. most of the other inexpensive lights are not nearly as nice as these.

Slow, weak. OK for home use? Definitely not pro use. Thanx for posting, though.

These are great as long as you are not trying to light the Lincoln Memorial. More than adequate for a small studio, but I like the B800 with 320ws power and only $55 more.

Do not scrimp on power. When using light modifiers you will appreciate power.

I've admired Paul Buff lights from back in the 80's. I'm not as familiar with the Alien Bees line as I am with the White Lightening, which were his original line. Always heard good things about them. I may have to up what I'm willing to spend, just don't tell my wife. LOL. My studio is my living room. Takes me about 20 minutes to convert it. I currently am using 3 old Sunpak flashes to light my subjects. Here's the results I'm getting,

Nice shot!

I have a set of Speedotron lights and powerpacks, but I also have about a dozen Sunpaks - I rarely take out the big guns anymore - too much trouble. But a have 4 2400ws lights and 2 4800ws lights - talk about bright - but most of the time all I really need are the little guys.

Thanks for your "Illuminating" response, Sonny. Someday you will shed some light on how you come to have this particularly unique sense of humor . . . :)

I would recommend a soft box kit, one that is cool in temperature and provides excellent lighting and is inexpensive. This is the kit I own. Something to think about.

Gene,
My Dad was an Illinois Farm Boy. He used to think a good cuff upside the head got my attention. Knocked some sense into me he did.
I can have fun anywhere.

Life is too short to be grumpy. ;)

Besides, I grew up over the hills from Hollywood. Before it became Hollyweird.
