First time shooting extreme macro (~3:1 ratio). Trying out the Vello Macrofier with a 35mm Zeiss lens reversed-mounted and a 25mm extension tube on a Canon 5D Mk III.
Nice. I think the Macaw feather was a good choice.
Very nice, I have yet to shoot a feather. Thank you for putting that on my list!
Exif info:
Camera Model: Canon EOS 5D Mark III
Lens: Zeiss Distagon T* 2/35 ZE
Image Date: 2015-01-18
Focal Length: 35mm
Aperture:
/22.0Exposure Time:
5-secISO equiv:
400Exposure Bias: none
Metering Mode: Matrix
Exposure: Manual
Exposure Mode: Manual
White Balance: Auto
Flash Fired: No
I have three suggestions:
1.) Open your aperture to f/11 to reduce "Small Aperture Distortion" (+ 2-stops);
2.) Reduce ISO to 200 (- 1-stop)
3.) Reduce shutter duration to 2.5-seconds (- 1-stop).
This will result in EXACT SAME exposure, but should increase image resolution.
FAQ: Why are my Digital Images Sharper at f/8 than f/22?http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-59819-1.html

Me either but, it's already on my list  I don't seem to be crossing things off my list very quickly :|
Very nice! I like it
Thank you all for looking and for your comments. I took Nikonian72's suggestion and re-shot the feather for 2-sec at f/11.
Much sharper! Thanks, Douglass.

Now that is significant improvement!
Anyone with a calibrated or automated macro rail should consider shooting several consecutive feather images at f/5.6 (lens best IQ), with just a minute difference (i.e. 1/10-mm) in Working Distance, then focus-stacking images.
Beautiful, download view required!!
Interesting optical illusion. The left border looks bowed and longer than the right.

Second shot an A+, and an A+ for Douglass and this forum, and how well it works for us. Probably not said enough.
The second shot is much better. The EXIF says "no flash fired". I also get that when I use my Yongnuo.
So, question for David: what illumination did you use?
I would also like to see this stacked. There's a lot of detail (and some lost) that could be recovered with a good stack. I've never had access to a Macaw (or peacock) feather. Do you have birds?
Thanks, Allen

I usually use continuous lighting for macros rather than flash when shooting at home - in this case, Wescott's Ice Light.
I don't have birds. But, my wife makes jewelry and has a lot of nice trinkets to photograph. She bought the Macaw (and peacock) feathers online for one of her pieces.
