Choosing an Expodisc size

The expodisc has peaked my interest in that it can provide an accurate custom WB plus measure incident light. Since I am in a GAS phase, this item seems very useful at a reasonable cost.

First question, the expodisc 2 only comes in two larger sizes now, is it any better than the original?? (comes with warming filters which I can dial in myself and a better lens fit they say)

2nd question - I have three lens, two 62 mm and one 52 mm. I can't seem to find any older 62 mm expodisc's so I guess I have to get a larger one like the 77mm. My worries with this one is having to take the lens hood off each time I want to use it. For those of you who use an expodisc, do you find this a hassle?? Should I wait till they put out some smaller ones so I don't have to remove the hood??

Take a look at the XRite Color Checker Passport - same or better results, and if you shoot raw, easier workflow. Only downside is that it has a "shelf life" of about 2 yrs. after which colors slowly start to change. I suspect that all color calibration devices age over time and need to be replaced.

Yes, the fiddling around you need to do with an Expo was enough to convince me it wasn't worth the hassle. I shoot raw, the CCP is shot as a target, and I continue shooting and worry about color later in post. And it has warming and cooling tiles to adjust the white balance to your liking later as well.

Can't comment on the Expo Disk II, I use the older version.

As to size, I have 67mm lenses and 58 mm lenses but most of my digital lenses are 77 mm. So I bought the larger size. The only difference is that when I'm setting white balance on my smaller lenses I have to hold it on the front of the lens. I've never seen that as a problem, after all you're not really taking a picture.

I should add too that it doesn't matter which lens you use for the white balance, you're measuring the colour. I usually use my normal lens (24-70) to set white balance and then use the same setting for all the other lenses during a shoot.

When I do a lens balance I never have the lens hood attached, The hood has always interfered with the disk. But I have never seen this as an issue either.

This works if you have established that all of your lenses are either "color neutral" or they impart the same color characteristic. Depending on the lens you may see some variation between lenses.

Choose the size for the largest lens you have, if you have a 77 mm diameter lens purchase that size Expo Disc, you can still use the Expo Disc to calibrate smaller lens sizes by holding the Expo Disc up to the smaller lens and using it set the white balance.
