EOS M AND LENSES

Hi fellow hogs,

I have a question for you. I just bought a Canon Eos M new for a steal with the 22mm lens and eos ef adapter.
I'm willing to fit other lenses - I'm thinking about a zoom.
My question is which lens do you recommend that can AF at a reasonable speed? even adapted ones.
I was thinking about the 18-135 is usm but then read that ther is the new STM version that is faster on the Eos M, is this true.
My main shots with this little piece of kit will be mainly static objects and travel photography.

Thanks.

Unless you have another EF body, I'd stick with the native lenses. By the time you add in the $99 for the Canon M to EF adapter I don't know that it's worth adapting since you'll loose the advantage of smaller sized lenses.

If you have another EF body, then here is the adapter. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=1021045&gclid=CLGZ46Xum8MCFUw2aQodOSMAkw&Q=&is=REG&A=details

I have the adapter because it came with the kit.

Sorry, missed that. The rest of my post would still apply in my opinion.

No problem. I would like to know which canon lenses AF reasonably other than native lenses.

From what I remember when I was looking at this when it first came out, autofocus in general was sluggish, regardless of if you were using adapted or native lenses. That may have changed with firmware updates since then.

I ended up going Fuji, so that's about all the info I have.

There isn't a lot of information out there on this system, as it has never sold that well, but it's out there if you look hard and long enough.

I also bought the eos m at an incredible price and love it.
I have both native lens and the adapter. I primarily do landscape photography.
I decided to buy the efs 10-18mm wide angle and it works really well.

You did not mention what type of photography you most enjoy.
With the current version of the eos m the focus is quite fast and, for me with my favored type of photography, the focus speed was never an issue.
The incredible image quality is pre-eminent.

By the way I also have a Minolta x700 film camera with several lens. An after market adaptor (quite cheap) allows me to use these lens with my eos m, in manual, and works very well.

I also do primarily landscape and will use it for travel/holidays with some 'architecture' like monuments, churches etc. so AF is no problem for me.
I wouls like a do-everything zoom like a 18-200 and a wide angle with good quality because like you for me IQ is preminent.

I have an EOS M and the 18-55 IS STM lens and that combo does a really good job to give you some short zoom. If you want something to take you from wide to mid-range tele because of the quality of the lens especially for video, I'd go with the newer 18-135 IS STM. It's not that much more money but is much more lens in quality. Of course, that has to be adapted but Amazon has had the Canon adaptor for $49.95 recently which makes it a good deal. I have other "L" lens, 70-200 f/2.8 IS II and 400 f/5.6L. I haven't used either of those with the EOS M yet but I have every confidence that they will work very well with it. It is a very nice little camera if you can work around the legend of the slow AF. I have a thread on uhh of test images you might want to look at. Be sure and look at the settings and study them in relation to the quality of the images, noise, and all that. I have not used any de-noise software on these shots: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-194977-1.html

You may or may not know about it but there is another M lens other than the 22mm and 18-55mm but it may not be of interest to you given what you say your interests are. It is 11-22mm and only available via ebay. This lens was introduced about a year ago and was $499 and here it is for $373 new from Japan. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canon-EF-M-11-22mm-F-4-5-6-IS-STM-Wide-Angle-Zoom-Lens-For-EOS-M-Japan-model-New/161430443094?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D27674%26meid%3Da36f6d1fa01c48a7b134fc13dfc88ee6%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D351265287096&rt=nc

There is also some talk about more new lens coming out with the "M" mount. You might find something about that here: http://www.canonwatch.com/canon-going-serious-mirrorless-2015-full-frame-milc-coming/

If you would like to get more info on available lens for the eos-m (including the one you mentioned) you can go to the website eos-m world.

http://eos-m.net

Good Luck with your new camera.
