I have a Olympus EP5 as many of you know. I enjoy shooting birds and landscape. I am planning on putting the Panasonic 14mm-140mm f3.5-5.6. I was just getting ready to purchase it for $560 at BH when the agent hits me on the extended warranty for $87. This is for drops and spills.

First of all is this a good route to go or is their a better at a better price? Secondly should I purchase the warranty? I have the funds, but I have am not that huge on warranties. Also, that lens is showing a four star on their site. Thanks for the advice. I just want to add, the members of this site are truly number one.

The question to ask yourself is "Have I dropped or otherwise damaged any of my other equipment ?" If the answer is no, then why bother with the added expense ...

Pay no attention to the star ratings on a merchant's website. The link will take you to the best equipment review site on the web. Note that the lens has no image stabilization so you will have none on a Panasonic body.

No offense, but my Panasonic 14-140 does have stabilization. I think in the Olympus system, the IS is in the camera anyway, so it won't matter.

I it helps, I'll give my f/3.5 Panasonic 14-140 six stars out of 5!

Regarding the extended warranty, I bought it for my camera but, a few months later when I bought the lens, I was feeling cheap. So far, I've not dropped it.

The lens I am looking at has f3.5-5.6, not f4 as the link is showing.

I will have to turn it off on the lens.

I have my own insurance on my equipment...therefore I wouldnt pay for it.

-FYI-
Olympus is announcing a 14-150 f4-5.6 in the next month...not that you'd want to wait for it to hit the shelves.

There is an extensive discussion on DPR in regard to a faulty OIS in the Pany 14-140 version 2.
You may want to check it out.

Put it on your house insurance as 'all risks' It will add £10-£12 per year.

If you are a business look at your tradesman's Insurance under tools and equipment.

Extended warrentees have been slammed time and time again...cause no-one reads the small print and they rarely pay out.

Speak to your insurer and see what they will cover your kit for.

That is a smart decision. I live in Phoenix and a non-professional
had all of his equipment stolen from his home. State Farm would not cover it. They said he was a professional even though he has never sold a photograph in his life. He is pretty upset which I don't blame him. He was interviewed and was on our local news. He said photography is just a hobby for me.

If you go to the Olympus website you can buy recondition lens for $399 and they'll sell you a warranty. I don't know if it's drops and spills. I wouldn't buy a warranty for a lens. The IS for Olympus is in the camera.http://www.getolympus.com/us/en/outlet/reconditioned-lenses.html?compatible_products=225&ici=savingsnav_outlet-recon-lenses&icn=topnav

You will need to decide the value, or not. It would not be for me.
Then again, a 3.5-5.6 lens would probably not be my choice for birds either.

Also a a 50-140 mm lens is not long enough for birds.
