Canon vs. Nikon --- not what you think.

Can all of us on this forum come to a simple understanding? On any of the numerous Canon vs. Nikon topics here, we should all realize that nothing really constructive or reasonable can come of this. But they can be a lot of fun. So when you open those swinging doors you should expect to be hit by a flying bottle the minute you are inside. Lots of jabs back and forth, all begin good naturedly, sadly not all end that way. If you are not ready for some give and take, don't go there ! If you go in, don't expect every chat to be with a perfectly reasonable, well informed gentleman. Expect clowns, bullys, fools and God knows what. Wear a helmet.

All I can say for sure is when I bought my first SLR, a Nikkorex F; a Canon was something that sat on a hill overlooking the Hudson...

I shot Canon for 40 years and when I went digital, I started with a 3MP Panasonic. Then I got a Sony 5.2 MP. I eventually got a Canon S5IS. Now I shoot with a Nikon D200 and am still learning. Brand is a choice, not a requirement.

How about I just add you to my ignore list?

I'd much rather see a debate on Sony vs. Panasonic (or similar). Anything but Nikon/Canon, as it's been done to death.

I think for most folk, such debates are good natured, nothing bad about either side being happy with their product and thus having some brand loyalty.

The only place I really saw any true ugliness was in your cheap lens thread, where all you seemed to be able to do was constantly insult Nikon users about how rude THEY were. Oddly, all I saw FROM the Nikon users were attempts to answer your post, and which went along the lines as the same things the Canon shooters replied.

I don't know if it's a case of envy breeding contempt or what, but it seemed to me from that thread, you were the only one who took it beyond good natured banter.

While loyalty is a good thing, in some cases but it can also work in reverse if we are not careful. One thing I know if you you purchase large amounts of equipment one is less likely to change because of costs. But if we become too content we may be defeating ourselves as far as future improvements go. It is the competition that causes the improvements. I have to have that because they have made it easier or I can do extra with this that I could not with the other. These things cause to have a desire to change and change is a good thing, not change just for the sake of change though. But improvement change. We should relish the competition not because we want to own but because this is the only way to improve. If one is content, too content, all improvement stops.

Like I said at the start of this thread, if you take things to seriously or have too thin a skin, you should avoid these obviously provocative threads.

I enter those threads assuming it is for fun. Unless it is a newbie. Then I think a warning is appropriate. And then the fun may commence!

That is one approach, which appears to be very self-centric, if not just plain selfish. I expect we are all familiar with being in public places with individuals or groups that are just loud and obnoxious and don't care about annoying twenty or thirty other people and perhaps spoiling an otherwise pleasant occasion.

A forum is a public place, and in general there are some standards of what constitutes acceptable behavior in public places.

You can clearly do what you wish to do, but it appears that at least some of the members of this forum would like to see a more measured approach with more consideration towards others.

If you alienate people and they decide not to participate in any thread that you are active in, or just to ignore what you say, does that actually benefit you in any way?

Many of these supposedly "humorous, fun exchanges" just end up wasting large amounts of time, and time is valuable for many of us.

So I would respectfully recommend that you avoid playing the game of competing for the position of the person who most frequently puts the "Ugly" into "Ugly Hedgehog", and take a more moderated approach where your obvious capabilities would be better appreciated.
