I'm looking for a 70-300 mm lens for my Nikon D610. This question, I'm sure, has been asked before. With all the experience on this forum, please advice me what I should be buying. Thanks in advance.
I have the Sigma 70-300mm APO DG and am very pleased with it. Last time I looked it was $159.00 new and less than $100.00 used. No IS but still very good value for money spent. (I use a Sony A77 w/ibis so Lens IS doesn't matter to me.

I would always go with Nikon (the best of the three), Tamron is ok, I would stay away from Sigma, unless it's one of the global vision series lenses.
Looks like this could have the makings of a Nikon/Canon thread with slightly different contenders.
DING!!! Round One......
I have the Nikkor 70-300mmVRg lens and I like it a lot. It does what it is supposed to do and it is solidly built with good IQ for the price. I like the results I get with it on my D610(and formerly my 600.) I would highly recommend it and after all....
It's a Nikon!

the D610 deserves a good quality lens.

I'm getting ready to list my Nikon AF-S 70-300 f4.5-5.6 G lens with VR. This is the FX version, but will work with either the DX or FX camera's. This lens is sharp and comes with caps and hood. No issues, clean copy!
I have the 70-200 f2.8 and the 300 f2.8, so have no more need for this lens. $300 shipped! I can provide pictures. I have sold on here, Fred Miranda and ebay.
If interested, drop me a PM on UHH.
I would go with the Nikon, it is the one with the best glass. Before I buy any new equipment I check out the test strips of a lens [knowing how to read them helps] from several different sources and go from there. And of the 3 Nikon has always had a better result.
When I started using digital I chose Nikon for 2 reasons--the lens test strips beat everything out there hands down --only Zeiss lenses were better. And the service rep. that Nikon has. And have been very happy with Nikon
Rule of thumb--buy the best that you can afford
In terms of quality my vote goes 1) Nikon, 2) Sigma, 3) Tamron.
I knew a few people who have used Tamron lenses and none were really happy. Some Sigma lenses are incredible, others only average. Nikon lenses have always been superlative at the higher end.
All but two of my lenses are Nikon including that 70-300.
Two of my lenses are Sigma. One is the 150-500 which I would rank Ok, and the 180 Macro which I rank as awesome.
That said I do have a problem with the choice of lens. When I first got into digital moving from film, the 70-300 was handy to own and use and it served me well. However as I moved away from entry levels I never touched it again. I feel it's a similar quality to a kit lens and all three makers have much better quality lenses than that one. I appreciate however that it's inexpensive and if you're starting out it's a good value.

I would recommend the Nikon 28-300. I have found no inherent weaknesses in this lens unlike the 18-200 which had a couple of "soft" spots. Although this is an FX lens, it almost never leaves my D7000 to make use of the crop factor and extending the long end to 450mm. It also close focuses to 9" at all focal lengths. Shooting a subject from less than a foot at 300mm is a good substitute for a macro lens. This is the only quality do-all lens I know of. With the FF camera you have you will loose on the long end, but will have a true wide-angle lens at 28mm on the short end.

I strongly endorse this recommendation. I have such a lens for my D3 and my D800. It's my favourite walk around lens for a variety of subjects and it's a lot better quality wise than the 70-300 is.

Depends on what you want to do with it. Snapshots of the grandkids, any lens will do. To take advantage of the D610's quality and features, I would save up for a Nikon 70-200 f2.8. that and the D6710's kit lens are a formidable combination, IMHO. Yes, I know the 70-300 takes great pictures too, but if you get the 70-200 you will never regret the purchase.

I would check the lenses under consideration using the DxOMark tools. You can select the D610 with each lens you are considering and get a lot of useful information using their Measurements tab. Sometimes the most expensive lens doesn't perform the best.

if you want to keep and use it for a lifetime, then the nikon lens is the one you want.
