When I take some noise out of my pics in LR 4,it takes the noise out of the whole picture,I just want it out of the sky ,is there any way I can do could this without taking it out of the whole picture? It tends to make my entire picture muddy or not as sharp. Thanks Jim Bianco

The default for Noise reduction is global, but you can add or remove noise reduction with the adjustment brush tool.

Use the brush, there are not as many controls as the Global noise suppressor, but it does work. I assume you don't have Photoshop or Elements to make selections and reduce noise in the selected areas only?

Can use the graduated filter in LR to make adjustments to the sky only.

If you know how to make selections in editing, you can apply noise reduction selectively any way you want. The areas you select may even be based on a particular aspect of the image - hue, brightness, saturation, etc.

Crude but effective, make a layer copy, apply noise reduction to the top layer as required then erase everything on that layer that you don't want affected. Merge the layers.

OP said he has lightroom only, thus no access to layers.

In addition to the great suggestions here, you might want to download a copy of OnOne Perfect Photo Suite - it's mask creation and refinement tools are excellent. You would create a mask for the area you want to apply aggressive NR to, and leave the rest of the image alone and vice versa. They also have an extremely accurate context-sensitive brush that you can use on the fly to do the same thing. There is only so much you can actually do with any degree of accuracy in a raw converter.
