Wondering if someone out there can help me please? All of a sudden on my Canon 7D when I go to take a photo the shutter clicks and it supposedly is taking a photo however the shutter stays shut for about a minute and then when it does open again there is no image. Have tried different lenses, have tried different settings, low ISO, high ISO, f stop at 2.8 up to 13, tried on AV, manual, custom settings (which are custom set) but the same thing happens each time so any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

You might want to try resetting the camera to original settings. Then try shooting at full auto. If the problem persists give Canon service a call and see what they say. Make sure the battery is fully charged when you return to original settings.

Does the shutter stay shut or open for about a minute. During this time what do you see if anything if you are looking through the viewfinder? Do you have a memory card in the camera? Try a new card and let me know what happens.

Thanks Boberic but I was trying to avoid that due to all my personal settings in my custom settings but that is a very good suggestion.

Yes the shutter stays open and when I look thru the view finder before I take the shot it focuses and does everything it should except of course take a photo. Tried a new memory card and recharged the battery - thanks for trying to help.

Just had another thought(I have those every now and then) How old is the camera and what is the the shutter count. I assume the camera is no longer under warantee. I suppose that the shutter may be blown, if the camera is old..

Good thought Boberic but it is about three years old and I did a shutter count about six months ago and everything was fine for a few more years.

Is it possible that you have enabled "Mirror Lockup"

Things sometimes get changed by accident... or maybe weird magic.

Personally Marki3rd I think it has gotten jealous as I now have the Mark II version!!!! It is a puzzle though that I would like to solve as I wanted it for a backup camera.

I second this notion. But you should write down your costom settings first. So you don't forget.

I don't think I can solve your problem but this may help you better determine what is going wrong.

You did not say whether you were sure that you were hearing the mirror or the shutter operating and if the camera was creating file or not. If the camera is not creating a file then you have a serious (maybe) problem in software. If it is then try taking a shot with a 1 second exposure while looking through the view finder. If the viewfinder goes blank then the mirror must be operating but probably not the shutter. If the viewfinder does not go blank then the mirror is not operating. Both will create a blank image (file). Also, have you checked your memory card to see what the files, if any, look like. If you have good files then you may have a problem with the camera displaying the images on it's LCD.

Good luck and get some antacid tabs for that uneasy feeling in the pit of your stomach that you must have.

My advise would be to go into the menu system and check for "mirror lockup" before you even consider the shotgun approach of resetting factory defaults. It sure sounds to me as if the mirror option is the problem.
