This works in the field or in a pinch too. Use three cans for shorter focal lengths and use five cans for the longer focal lengths. So you can see even three cans give you about 8", 4 on either side of center. Set the cans at about 20 degrees off center and so that the small print shows. Any questions?

This will work, and may help ....but a rough/coarse way of doing it .....if you are taking the time and trouble to do this, may as well get the highest precision possible !

Here's a more accurate focus test that's free.

Shouldn't they be cans of adult beverages, recently emptied, to make the effort more challenging? :-)

The cans are unnecessary, that tape measure is the very best tool to use for the job all by itself.

That all depends! If you are checking a 300mm with a 1.4 TC out at 35' the minimum distance a tape measure is hard to see. If you are out and things are looking off 5 cans of beer or pop are easy to come by. I do have the LenAlign system minus the long ruler (yard stick) that they want a fortune for but I bought mine for under $3.00 at Home Depot. And how are you going to set up a tape measure at the right angle and hold it there.

I agree but I have been out shooting with friends and have had someone say that they think their focus is off, didn't bring the tape measure with me, oh darn. We were able to come up with 5 cans of pop and set this up at about 65' and get it pretty close, in the field. I have the Lens Align permanently set up at home on a measured range

I've tried that and while it may work for short focal length lenses it's not very good with long lenses, been there and tried it. And if you read up on the gentleman that came up with that chart you'll see that he worked with the company that came up with the "LemsAlign" and has said there are better ways to go. Here is what I use at home.

I agree, but to some it's already too challenging to start with.

One more thing, when you empty the cans the wind plays hell with them!

I am very cheap. I use an old wooden yard stick to check mine. The numbers are very sharp on it and seems to work great. :)
