Obviously the forth battery top is the only one in good focus but ...., look at the fabric under the batteries. The fabric between #2 and #3 is in focus while that under #4 is not. I can't explain it, just noticed it.

Well, as batteries got, it looks OK to me.

Why not download a focus chart?

Because of the perspective, I suspect the bottom of the third battery is about the same distance from the lens as the top of the fourth.

Top of the fourth battery, but I use a yardstick and shoot at about a 30 degree angle. Camera on a tripod. Camera horizontal and the yard stick propped one end up to achieve the angle.

Focus at 18 inches on the yardstick. Get more precise DOF plus front and back focus.

Looks like you've found the shallowest depth of field you can get with that lens. Why not try progressively smaller apertures to see the effects on DOF?

focused between 3 and 4 but much closer to 4.
These curved batteries do not make ideal targets, use a flat ruler and give it a well defined high contrast stripe to focus on..

Wont a smaller aperture make everything in focus?

It must be ok because that's the one I focused on, thanks.

There are some good focus test charts available online. The 1 I use is http://regex.info/blog/photo-tech/focus-chart from Jeff Friedl. And it's free.

If you stand six feet away from a wall your eyes and your feet are both six feet away from the wall (give or take, you may have big feet!) But if you measure how far away the bottom of the wall is from your eyes, it will measure out to about 7 1/2 to 8 feet away depending on your height. Your lens is like your eyes, the wall directly in front of your eyes is six feet away, but it is a much farther distance from your eyes (lens) to the bottom of the wall.

What does this mean?

It means Harley's eyeballs are 5 feet 3 1/2 inches from the floor so he's about 5' 8 1/2" tall. :) It also means that the cloth at the base of the fourth battery is farther from the lens than the top of the battery is so it won't be in focus.

I didn't focus on cloth, focused on top of battery, thanks.
