I have a Nikon 24/85 lens, f2.8 to 4, with a nifty macro feature.

For some reason the left side started focusing soft. Nikon wants $200 to look at it. Any suggestions?

Likely an element has shifted or become loose. Because of dust concerns i would have it done by a reputable repair facility.you may find a local Nikon authorized facility that will do the work cheaper. If you are using it professionally consider letting Nikon do the work. Expensive but done right and it would be a tax deductible expense

Check with Camtronics here in Columbus, OH. They're authorized Nikon service 614-483-5151 and will likely be less expensive than sending it to Nikon.

You have to weigh the cost of repair which could be $200 or more, against the cost of replacing it, which could be around $350. Getting a cheap repair is not a good idea - and if I am not mistaken, local authorized repair is not going to be any cheaper or any better/worse than sending it to Nikon. Only Nikon authorized shops have access to parts, manuals, training, etc - so it really doesn't matter either way. You might get a faster turnaround with a local shop though.

...why do you continue to make comments, when none of them make any sense?

well like the person who was assuming "quote " if your are using it professionally send it to nikon . I'm just assuming if he was using it, as you assumed he was . I would assume that he's smart enough to assume that
