Using canon 100-400 II lens with 7D2 problems?

I tried the canon 100-400 II on my 7D2 and it only would manual focus, I also tried it with my 2x tele and only got manual focus. Specs on B&H say only FF. Anybody having any problems as some here on UHH seem to be using it on the 7D2, could it be operator error?

Couldn't find the "only" word on the B&H description, just a reference to "developed for full frame"

Have you carefully checked that the lens isn't set to manual focus or something similar?

Was there enough light for AF to work?

This link (possibly too much information) firmly implies it should work.

Good luck

I am suprised since the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM is a brand new lens. It was announced in November and I think did not ship until earlier this month.Since you must have just received it you should contact Canon immideately.

" This new L-series super- telephoto zoom lens features Canon L-series weather resistance and rugged magnesium housing to meet the needs of wildlife and sports photographers or photojournalists working out in the elements. Fully compatible with all EOS cameras, the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM features a completely redesigned optical formula containing one Fluorite and one Super UD lens element ─ a combination unique to lenses in this focal range ─ to help deliver sharp images with high resolution and contrast."

The above statement is a manufacturers description of the lens. As you can see it should be compatible with all of the canon EOS cameras. If I were you I would do a reset back to all the original settings of the 7D2 camera and see what happens, page 70 in the manual. It sounds to me like you made a setting change that is causing this. This lens replaces the original 100 – 400 mm lens which works flawlessly with all of the Canon EOS cameras. I can't see it not working with one of Canon's newest cameras.

Operator error or Camera failure.
My 100-400 II AF works beyond my expectations on an old 7D as well as my 10D. This includes my 2X III when attached.

Yes, operator error is what it probably is. No telling exactly what it is unless we can see your setup.

Cleaned the contacts on the 7Dii and the 100-400 ii AF worked. I called canon and this lens AF does not work with a 2X extender only a 1.4. It will work with manual focus with the 2x extender, tho.

I saw an article in one of the online mags recently that linked to a chart at Canon, which expalins which camera body/lens/extender combos work wiht AF. Hopefully the Canon rep gave you that chart.

Live view AF should work with the 2x.

A friend of mine got that new 100-400 earlier this week and has been successfully using AF every day using a 7D MK II. It will even AF with a 1.4 attached using center point focus only.

That pair will absolutely 100% utilize AF just fine.

I hate to tell you but you're not looking at much better weather. A high of 21 on Saturday, 36 on Sunday. Sunny on Saturday and cloudy on Sunday.

Not bad days for shooting if you can deal with the temperatures.

We are usually a good 2 or 3 degrees warmer here in the city. Of course the wildlife is all on South Street.
