problem with flash on my t3i in auto mode

When I take pictures in the auto mode using the pop up flash my pictures are very dark. It doesn't seem to matter what distance I am away from my subject. This doesn't happen in the P mode. Hopefully someone can shed some light on the problem. Thanks in advance.

I rarely use the flash on my T3i, but there is some info on pages 180-181 in the book. Perhaps you have the ISO in P set to higher than is coming up on auto? Can you post examples of each, with the "store original" box checked?

Since you have ventured into P mode, maybe stay there rather than using auto? (pages 74-75) Is there a specific reason you want to continue with auto?

Thanks Linda. I do use the P mode quite often. I was just hoping that there's not a problem with the flash element. I don't have any of the dark ones to post because I deleted them.
Thanks for your help!

I would think the problem is in the metering of the situation. Place the camera in "Auto" and take some photos in varying lighting, bright to very dim. See where the pop-up flash actually pops up, and fires. You may want to look at the menu for flash, and be sure all the settings are correct. In "Auto" the flash should still fire, but at various intensity based on the metering. I don't shoot Rebel products, but do shoot Canon. Take a look at the full manual about "Auto" and flash photography. Good Luck

This would be a good reason to try out the Manual Mode. I start out with reasonable settings for the lighting conditions. Most of the time I start out with something like f/5.6, 1/100th shutter speed and ISO 400. From there I fine tune the settings. The camera will automatically adjust the flash power within reason to get good exposure. The popup flash has a very limited range.

No flash is not going to light up the whole world. If I want more of the background to be lit up, I adjust the camera settings so background is a bit lighter.
