Hi all, I'm travelling to Canada and Alaska in June and I need help in choosing which camera to take with me.
I have a Canon 70d with the Tamron 16-300mm. A Sony RX10 and a Leica V-lux 4.
The Canon is somewhat heavy
The Sony has dissapointed me when shooting action in low light

What are your thoughts. I would appreciate you're input

Bill

You didn't mention a budget but either a Nikon D7100 for DX format or a D610 if you want to go Full Frame. Both are outstanding cameras that'll give you years of dependable service.

Thanks for your thoughts but I already have the three cameras in my kit bag and I had chosen the Canon over the Nikon D7100 some time ago.
I just want input on the three cameras I wrote about
Cheers

Of the three cameras mentioned, I'd go with the Canon. The Sony has already disappointed you, and the Leica is a Superzoom. You will usually get better images from a DSLR than from a Superzoom. Then, too, 20MP beats 12MP.

The Canon, the Tamron lens, and I would add a super telephoto if I were doing Alaska again.
If you have the reach, you can choose to not use it.
But if you don't have the reach, you sure can't use it.
And a monopod.

And I would never do Glacier Bay in June again. The National Park Service wouldn't let us in the bay because there were fur seals birthing and rearing pups. About 1000, they said.
I did see.... 4. :?
Our son went in April and May and they sat in front of the big glaciers and watched them calve. (He's been 3 times)
So very disappointing!
Of course, the cruise lines don't tell you this, or nobody would go then.
I'd like to go back, but in the RV. And just poke around all summer.

That statement is not necessarily true, just depends on what your intention for the picture/file.

I would personally choose the Leica V-lux 4. With the super zoom it's all the equipment you'll need for your trip. There's no need to carry a ton of weight especially if you plan on doing a lot of walking.

Bill,

I don't think there's much of a choice, it would be the Canon. You might want to look at the Tamron 150 – 600 mm lens to take with you also. A very nice lens and will give you decent reach.

Take the Canon with you, you have a lens attached to it that you can use for most things and in June the days are long in Alaska so darkness will not be much of a problem for you.

Thank you all for your inputs. I guess I'll take the Canon and the Lieca as a backup. Weight is an issue but I'll manage

All most ALL cameras will disappoint when used for action in low light ! The Sony RX10 is a GREAT camera - it IS the one to take for traveling light- if it is disappointing you, then you may be doing something wrong ! ( or- not doing something right). If I thought I could stand the weight/encumberence I would also take the Canon - or- if I were very serious about my images......

Thanks for your input, the Canon just snaps into focus and is very fast but also heavy over a long period. I guess someone will be getting a very good RX10 when I let it go. I did try to pre-focus and pre-set all the controlls but missed a lot of shots. Could be just me.
