Hello and happy holiday to you all. I hope you all got what you wanted for Christmas and you are all out there having fun.
I have a question for all you UHH. I had a tripod that I purchased from Costco it's a Dolica proline, however the hook you use to add weight to stabilize the tripod fell off so I took it back. For the most part I liked the tripod but I am in need of a new tripod and I would like some assistance in finding a good replacement. I am willing to spend about $200, and I need one that is not too heavy to haul around. Your input would be highly appreciated. Thanks.
I got the hook this week from Dolica for $25. You can order it online at their web site. They sent me the whole assembly, so I just unscrewed the hook and put it into my existing tripod. I like that tripod, I wouldn't get another one just because of the hook. From now on, I'm making sure it's screwed in tight. Hope this helps.
Get a Manfrotto or a Gitzo. I have a Manfrotto 055xProB and I love it. Get a rig that'll support 1.5 to 2 times the load you will hang on it.
Hello and good day to all you UHH. Hope you all had a great Christmas and you all got some new gear.
I have a question, I had a tripon that I purchased from Costco, it's the Dolica proline. It was an ok tripod, however the hook for where you add weight to stabilize came off and have no idea where it occured. I am looking to buy a new one and I am willing to spend approximately $200. I would like to get one that is not too heavy. For now the camera I use is the Nikon D7000 with several different lens with the heaviest being to 17-55 2.8. Any assistance with this would be highly appreciated. Thanks.
I took it back to Costco already.
PM Mt Shooter - I got one from him that pairs up with my camera, lenses and my 5"2 frame :)
Vanguard makes very nice tripods at very reasonable prices, but you are also looking at purchasing a ball head. So this will be out of your 200$ range.

I will second that on Vanguard. Excellent quality. 8-)

Two thoughts:
1. Use
blue thread lock on the attachment. This will permanently fix it. If you want it to be removeable, then use
red thread lock.
2. Consider a small ground screw (like for a dog chain) and an adjustable strap or bungee cord to fix your tripod firmly to the ground. Admittedly this can be a problem when the earth is frozen or you are standing on a piece of granite.
"1. Use blue thread lock on the attachment. This will permanently fix it. If you want it to be removeable, then use red thread lock."
Actually, that is exactly backwards. RED is PERMANENT. Blue is removeable.

Ah! Dyslexia strikes again. Thanks for the correction.
I had used many models. Couple things to keep in your mine than selecting one of yours.
-How tall are you, tripod weight, do it need to fit in roll-on carrier, do you like to fasten it on camera back bag, what is the camera gear you use on it.
I do like a lot of my Manfrotto 190CX PRO4 with Manfrotto 496RC2 ball head and Manfrotto Bogen 3157N quick release connect plate RC2.
This is carbon f./mag.tripod, in other words light weight. My use with up to the 400mm lenses. leg extensions are with clips,so no need turning on turn buckles and known when one is close or not.
Since this is build from carbon fiber is bit more on the price than your $200 guide line.

Even if you can't afford their gear, the Really Right Stuff web site has excellent information on choosing a tripod.
