My wife is stating a 3 month visiting nurse assignment in Santa fe, New Mexico on January 5, 2015, and I will be going with her. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of where to try my hand at getting the best shots while in the area? I am mostly interested n landscape photos but will take anything that catches my eye.

I thank you for any and all input.

Tim

Some of the old town shops are fun. A trip up to Taos for ski and winter scenes. There's a nice pub up there too. You'll see dried red peppers on display all over NM, makes for some interesting CU experiments.

Santa Fe and Taos people, culture and street photography is a rich source of photo ops.
If you do any Macro try shooting the Turqouise jewelry offered by the street vendors.
For landscape/nature shooting try the Pecos Wilderness/Pecos River area northeast of Santa Fe about 20 miles. Find the town of Pecos then follow the Pecos River up toward the Wildnerness area. It is an up and back 40+ mile round trip on a paved road with several side roads both paved and gravel.
When you get to the entrance to the Wilderness area you might spot an early 1900s cabin that was once owned by former NM Governor Campbell. A friend of mine, since deceased, had a part ownership in the old place after the Governor had it and he and I and a few of our good friends would gather there once a year to swap the same old stories and lies, smoke cigars, drink whiskey (some good and some of the Clan MacGregor variety) and choke down my old friend's Posole. All in the presence of the Governor whose ashes were still in a box on the fireplace mantle. I always drive out to that old cabin when I am in the Santa Fe area.

Go up the road to Ghost Ranch, Abiquiu. Fabulous area. Ansel Adams shot his famous Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico nearby. Check out some shots.

Also look up

Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument which is south of Santa Fe about 30-40 minutes. Slot canyon which, although narrow at spots, is very passable, and photogenic at various times of the day. Antelope Canyon it is not, but let your photographic enzymes go to work!

I thank you everyone for the great suggestions and quick response. I can not wait to get out there and see if I can do half the job I have seen.

Thank you,

Tim

You are already there, Tim.
"...but will take anything that catches my eye."
Beautiful! Enjoy!

My recollections of New Mexico was it's chilly there. So pack some easy-to-peal layers.
And for a 3 month photo safari, maybe a portable hard drive for storage.
Enjoy, and safe travels! ;)

I know this sounds like a real downer but, be safety conscious. New Mexico and Santa Fe have high crime rates. Keep cameras, etc. in the trunk, out of sight. http://www.areavibes.com/santa+fe-nm/crime/
