Looking for an all around lens somewhere around the.......... 18-150/200 range. Nikon is a stretch for me and I'm looking for an unbiased hogger or website that will give me some insight as to what I'm looking at. I think I'm going to stray from the course......... which is it sigma or tamron
I have a Sigma 18-250mm and am pleased with it and the price. I would tell you that I am barely an amateur, so probably not the most knowledgable on the subject.
Sigmas with the USB dock make them better for most applications ....

You might take a look a Sigma's "Art series lenses" and see if any of them fit your needs. The build and quality stand up with the best of them. I have Nikon and Sigma, and see little difference in sharpness and quality. Many good reports on the forum for the new Tamron's,. The new Sigma contemporary 18-300mm would be worth looking at. Mt shooter here on the forum, uses and sells both. might want to PM him.

Thanks Im sure I should get enough info here to make a educated guess.........JIM
Have had a Sigma 18-250 for 8 months and like it very much at that price point, have taken it on an African safari and it did very well. I recently moved up to the Sigma 18-300 Contemporary for $579 and got the $60 USB dock. It's a great lens out of the box and I'm working on fine-tuning it to make it absolutely tack sharp. If you can stretch a little, this is the way to go. The 18-250 is a good walking around lens and any minor problems it might have are easily taken care of in Lightroom. Hope this helps, feel free to PM me if you want more details...

About a year ago I bought a Nikon D5300. At the time I had three Sigma lenses. I came across an article online which said that some Sigma lenses required firmware upgrades before they could be used on my D5300. I contacted Sigma. They informed me that yes, three of my Sigma lenses needed upgrading. Sigma sent the UPS labels, I sent them in, they were upgraded, and have been working well ever since. Except for the 6-10 days I was without the lenses, I am happy with the Sigma brand.

My advice as a photo enthusiast is to pick a lens type (zoom and mm's) then go to your local camera store and try the two brands. I have done that twice now. I liked the Tamron 18-270 zoom over the sigma equivalent because it felt better and had a slightly higher zoom end at 279 vs. 250. For a 10-24 wide angle, I went with the Sigma. I am getting ready to do it again for the 150-600 super zooms. Tamron has had great reviews but we patiently await the Sigma C version.
Tamron 18 - 270.....can be a little stiff between 135 - 200 but an all around fine lens that takes in all the ranges at a reasonable price (not sure the Di is necessary and the earlier versions are less expensive.)
While it doesn't have the 200+ capacity, the Nikon 18-140 AFS is a great walk around lens that has been reviewed highly. I have one and use it as my "go to" lens and is always mounted. The IQ is great and at f3.5 it is fast enough for most conditions by adjusting the ISO.
I felt that for reach I wanted a dedicated lens and bought a barely used Nikon 80-200 f2.8 which is an incredible piece of glass.
That always sounds like sound advice but to really get an idea of the pros and cons of each lens I'm gonna waste this guys time quote=Revet]My advice as a photo enthusiast is to pick a lens type (zoom and mm's) then go to your local camera store and try the two brands.
