Revising My Equipment

As time goes on my DSLR,lenses, tripods etc. are starting to get a little heavy for walk-around photography. I am thinking of getting something like the SX60 or something similar. My wife has the SX40 that I am playing with to see if I like the size and the features. It has about an 800 mm 35mm equivalent. I took it out to the front yard this morning and shot the mockingbird on my pyracantha bush at 800mm hand held. Here is a photo right out of the camera with no cropping etc. What do you UHH folks think of this quick shot and my idea of downsizing. I like to shoot nature and wildlife.

A lot of folks like the Canon line - the SX50 refurbished is on sale from the Canon site right now - $179.99 -

Well, the picture looks fine to me.
And I'd say, Do whatever you are comfortable with.
Nobody out here is taking your pictures for you, you are. So revising your gear is entirely up to you.
Besides, you will probably be upgrading as well... Ever think about that? You will be moving into something less dated than your current equipment.
You might want to get something like a nice carbon fiber monopod as well. Works as a camera support, but can double as a walking stick as well. ;)

Thanks SonnyE and Shellback for your thoughts. I guess I was trying to compare the IQ of the SX40 with my other lenses to see if I would suffer a degredation of image. The one I posted should look lots better with a little post processing.

The SX line of cameras are nice, but I think at the end of the day you'll be disappointed with the IQ compared to your DSLR, simply because of the tiny sensor these cameras have.

You may want to look at the mirroless systems, Fuji X, Sony (formerly NEX), Samsung, and the Pentax K-01 are APS-C sized sensors, similar to consumer and prosumer DSLRs. Panasonic and Olympus are Micro 4/3 sized sensors, which is a little smaller than the APS-C. All of these are great systems, are small, and still offer interchangeable lenses.

Nikon has a mirroless line as well, but has the smallest sensor of the above at 1 inch.

If you want to go the superzoom, all in one route, the Sony RX-10 and Panasonic FZ1000 both have 1 inch sensors, smaller than the above, but much larger than the Canon SX line.

An SX-50 or SX-60 will also allow you to shoot in RAW, so you can make more drastic improvements in your post processing if you choose to. I have an SX-510 as a spare camera and my only gripes with it are no RAW, no viewfinder and it only goes up to F8. I believe these are all addressed in the cameras you are considering.

I solved that problem by getting a new Canon EOS Rebel SL1--the lightest DSLR made. It isn't heavy at all. I also have an older Canon SX1 (10 mp bridge camera) with a long zoom that is even lighter and easy to use. If you want to ditch the DSLR and go to a new bridge camera, I'd agree with the SX-50and SX-60 crowd.

I think this is an excellent shot, especially since it was at 800mm and hand-held. Very nice.

To all who responded, thank you very much. The suggestion on the Rebel SL-1 is worth looking into. Will keep you all posted as to what I decide. Perhaps my decisions will help someone else in the future.
