Just had an expeience Christmas night I thought I'd pass on. While loading the car with gifts etc., I had my Sony RX 100 in my hand in a small camera bag. It got in the way so I set it on top of my car for a moment. When I got home across town I realized that I had left the camera on top of the car. My Grandson's comment when he found it was: "Sorry Gran'pa it's not in great shape". That turned out to be an understatement, it was in hundreds of pieces, apparently run over by a Hummer. Did salvage the SD card and some Christmas photos.
So here's the first "Don't" on my list: 1. Don't EVER put your camera on top of the car. Can anyoone add to the list?
My experience was cheaper but not as convenient. I had just started to wear glasses for driving. Always took them off when taking pics (still do). Stopped to take a coyote pic, drove away and heard a funny noise. Yup, saw the glasses sliding down the roof, over the truck and landing in pieces on the pavement. Hopefully the insurance company reimburses you somewhat. Happy New Year!
Been there! Done that! with my first DSLR :( Saved the body but the lens was toast.
I got stupid and set my phone on the gunwale while trailering our boat, amazingly it stayed there 50 miles home. Never again.

I set my camera bag on the trunk lid, to close to the edge, walked away, and heard it drop on the ground! I set my camera, more than once, in the car seat beside me, and hit the brakes, just to hear it hit the floor. I learned to set my camera bag, or camera, where it will be and not where it's.....

2. This one goes back 45 years but is still valid. I like to party. Went to a Woodstock type music festival, shot one roll of film, then never got the camera reloaded for the rest of the 3 days. :(

Thank heavens it's not just me. Did that sober at a family get together. Realized the problem as I was about to snap shot 48 on a (I thought) 36 exposure roll. Wife still won't let me forget that.

My micro four thirds camera fits in the cup holder - although sometimes I reach for it without looking and get a thumb on the lens.

Thanks for the tip....sorry you had to learn it the hard way. Here's another....never put your sunglasses in the driver's seat when you get out to take a photo. I did that and sat on a nice pair of Serengetis. Fortunately, I was able to replace the arms and that fixed them.

Similar. Went on vacation to Grand Canyon and surrounding areas... Sedona, Painted Dessert, Petrified Forest, etc. Realized day 2 when we arrived at the Grand Canyon that the film in our Minolta SLR never wound...had zero photos. Grudgingly, my sweet husband retraced some of our trip just so I could get some shots of where we had been. So glad to not have to worry about that any more.

Yes, 2. If you put your camera on the top of the car, you MUST remember to put it in your pocket before you drive on.

Ever so often, I'll be on the streetcar on my way home from work & I'll see carry-out on top of the car next to the streetcar. Leftovers are never as big a loss as your camera.
Two or three times I have set down a circular polarizer filter and left it there while changing to a UV filter on my lens. One hundred miles down the road I realize my forgetfulness.
Since, I have learned to switch filters without setting down anything.

If you must set something on top of the car, put your keys with it. ;)
(Caution: That may not prevent a drive off with a keyless ignition car. But you'll stop when the keys and your miss placed cargo falls off.)
Never wade out to your boat with your phone in your pocket.
