I am looking to purchase a new 600mm for my Canon 7D Mark ll. I know the Sigma Sports is about $1000 more, but I am looking for the best long wildlife lens I can get in the price range of the two. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The USB docking feature of the Sigmas alone will make for better performance by them. Since you have the 7D II and can AF @f8, you also have the options of the 100-400 II or the 400 prime with 1.4X. Either of these will be lighter/smaller getting you to 560mm - but @f8 instead of 6.3.

I myself have seen a lot of photos taken with the Tamron and they seem great to me. That would be my choice plus I understand it is lighter then the sigma. Tamron 6 year warranty and I think the Sigma is 4 Years. Take a look at Regis (from Idaho) photos...Rich

Thanks big wolf 40. I didn't know about the weight, or the warranty. I have seen his photos and they are incredible! Good point.

Thanks gawler for the info. Interesting how it works great on a FF, but not so well on the crop?

Tamron = 4.3 pounds.
Big Sig = 6.1 or so.

Get both, decide, sell the one you decide you don't want.
Done.

Thanks SonnyE. Yea, wish I had it like that....too much money for me. Your reply did give me an idea, RENT both and see which I like better.

That could be an excellent way to try them out.
But bare in mind you won't be shooting a new lens.
Rather, you'll be shooting one that has had questionable handling.

Whatever you get, think gimbal head and tripod down the road.
I started off with a monopod and ball head. Now I'm using my Tamron on a Nest Gimbal Head on my own version of a heavyweight tripod. And I love the combo!

Best wishes for a happy ending to your search. ;)

It took me 7 months to get the Tamron and a few weeks to get the Sigma sport ( ordered it the day it was released). Both arrived within 2 weeks of each other, so I tried both and decided the Sigma sport was much better. Sharper pictures and well built. Yes, it's heavier and cost a grand more. But then again you get what you pay for. Returned the Tamron to B&H -easiest return ever. Very pleased with their service.

The not new and questionable handling is something to think about. Actually, I got the horse before the cart...I already have a Nest Gimbal Head and used Manfrotto tripod that I bought from Carter (MTShooter). Just need to decide on a lens.

Thanks, best wishes to you for a happy and prosperous New Year!

Thanks for the info. I was hoping someone out there had used both, and could give me their opinion. Yes, B&H is awesome. Do you have any pics taken from both lenses?

Get the Sigma. You won't be sorry. It is an unbelievable lens. I'd also get the USB dock for it.
I got mine from Robert's camera in Indianapolis. Fast service and shipping. I was able to "sidetrack" the long waiting lines at the N.Y. Stores.

One thing though. It DOES weigh 6.3 pounds.

Hey Don, pictures of the great lakes in storm always remind me of Gordon Lightfoot.
