What a BRILLIANT thread.. No one has forced their opinion on anyone, there have been opposing views but in most part the posts have been informative, beneficial and never inflammatory.
MUCH, much respect to those that have helped recover an image that was to all intents only good for the bin, they have made the proverbial purse from a pig's ear.
Hopefully the author of this thread really appreciates the time, the effort and the skills that have been used to do this.
Top thread with top people contributing to it.
THANK YOU for an interesting and informative read.

I do a lot of Real Estate photography and there is one thing that caught my eye on your picture. Others have given you all some very good advices. May I also give you one.
When you take an interior picture try to keep your lens horizontal to the floor and when you look through the lens looke at the walls. Walls are nearly always vertical.
Just my two cents.
Here is your picture to show what I mean.
OK, so 'm new here and I'm late to this thread. Still, might I agree with an earlier post that suggest the use of Fill Light. No need for Photoshop though... just use Google Picasa which is completely free.
It includes tools for Fill Light, Highlights, and Shadows, and it does a reasonable job in a very short time.
This is my take on your picture. (I didn't try reducing the noise from the original image.)
