Advice on a New Lens

Hello Folks....

My cheapo Nikon kit lens just broke...Nikon 18-105. Am considering Sigma 18-200 and newer 18-250 as a replacement for my Nikon D7100. Have read some on-line reviews, both seem to get fairly good ratings. I know there are some limitations for both, but outside of my skill level at this time. Thanks for your time. I got the Sigma 18-250 last week for my D-7000. So far I am pleased with it. Here are a couple of pictures of my wife's flowers in our front yard (Christmas in Houston). Don't ask me what the names of the flowers are. My wife knows but she won't tell me. Merry Christmas everyone.

The Sigma 18-250mm is a VERY nice lens at the current $349 price point. But if you have a couple hundred more then the newest 18-300mm Sigma Contemporary model is an easy upgrade, its an amazing lens at that zoom length!

I concur with MT from personal experience. I just moved up to the 18-300 and it's great if you can stretch a little on the money. I still have my 18-250 and it's a good walking around lens, particularly at that price. The 18-250 has a little distortion at the wide end and gets a little soft above 200mm, but this is true with most all purpose zooms. Lightroom takes care of most of these issues nicely.

The newer Tamron 16-300 VC PZD and Sigma 18-300 OS HSM have a little greater focal length range and may be a little sharper, but the Sigma 18-250 Macro OS HSM is a very good all-in-one lens and a lot less expensive.

Glad you got yours replaced. Nice photos. The second is a Cyclomen, cannot remember the name of the first at the moment.

Nikon still make the 18/200 lens with VR. I like it, the other ones that go further are soft over 200 or much more expensive.

Good luck deciding.

Could the first flower be as Zinnia?

Thanks to all who commented on my question about a new lens. Did find a used Sigma 18-250 Macro OS HSM for 299.00. Ad from B and H says mint condition. Have seen this Tamron lens out there. Have a Nikkor 300 mm lens, that would be the only reason to not get it. Thank you and happy holidays.

I have been very pleased with the newer Sigma 18-250; i use it for my outdoors walk-around lens on a Nikon D5300. But all of my Sigma lenses (also 50-500 and 8-16) had to have their firmware udtated to work correctly with the D5300. Indoors, I use mostly a Nikon 16-85. With 16-300, the new Tamron is tempting because it goes wider, but it's reviews have not been that great compared to the Sigma 18-250, which is smaller, cheaper, and lighter. At the long end, you can always crop an image taken at 250 to get a 300mm equivalent picture.

Looks like you took pictures of the flowers in my yard here in Houston......Cyclomen and Zinnias. Let us know on which lens you decide.
