I haven't decided on a last minute unexpected present for my SO.

If you had to pick between a B+W Circular Polarizer or Canon's GPS Receiver GP-E2 assuming you had neither, what do you think would get more use.

Thanks in advance everyone.

GPS is a gadget, a neat toy, but not essential. The CPL can be a valuable staple in any photographer's kit. Toy or tool? Flip a coin...l

IMHO, a good polarizer is a fundamental accessory so if your SO doesn't have one for each lens, that is the place to start.

Polerizer.
I usually know where I am, so a GPS is more of a gadgit to me.

Personally, the GPS receiver for me would be used more as I like to geocode all my images. I have an Opteka GPS unit that sits on my Nikon, cost was about $35.00. It will add the GPS data to the exif of each image.

If I do not have the GPS with me I will use my IPhone to save a tracking log that gets added after importing images into Lightroom, cost for the app, $0.00

Of course, what bugs me about the Opteka is it has to connect to the remote shutter connection and sit on top of the camera in the hot shoe - with the cable dangling over the camera - if it could feed the gps data thru the hot shoe that would be great!

BUT - I suppose it depends what kind of shots are taken as to whether the polarizer would get used much.

Since most of my photography is taken while traveling in remote places, a GPS is essential, both in knowing exactly where it was taken, but also to make story telling possible. But, to tell the truth, I also have a circular polarizer. But I use it less often than the GPS.

BTW, I most often use a GlobalSat DG200. It hangs around my neck and does not interfere with camera usage at all. The photos get tagged in post processing.

I have both.

The polarizer gets used when I need it.

I frequently forget to turn the GPS on. I use Lightroom, so I can add geotag information afterwards (if I can remember where I was). That will place the geotag in the final image but it won't be in the RAW file.

I'd go for the polarizer.

It depends. For one who likes to reduce reflections and darken a blue sky in their photos, I'd say the polarising filter. For one who doesn't know where they've been, I say the GPS unit.

I say the Circular Polarizer. In my opinion it's the most important filter to have. My experience with GPS units is that they take too long to access the satellites and they eat battery.

You've all been great. Going to sit on the GPS for now and ordered the CP. I'm sure the blue skies, lack of reflection and richer colors will make the biggest difference.

most smart phones have gps you could snap a shot with that and use the gps exif information on your proper shots

With that rationale,I probably should consider a GPS! However, with a decent CPL,you can have a good time regardless of where you are,my vote.

I would pick the CP - the GPS would not work with my Nikon!!   Merry Christmas!! Mike J.
