My current tripod is old, clunky and won't go low for macro. On the other hand it goes to 66" full extension. I would really like to replace it with a travel tripod in the $50-$150 range. There are no good camera stors locally so I can't try one out. I ballhead over pan and tilt head a functional or personal choice. any suggestions?
Depends on how much your gear weighs. Should have a capacity of at least 1.5 times the weight of the equipment you'll hang on it.
Personally I like Manfroto. Check out B&H.
I saw Manfroto tripods at walmart, the other day.

Go to the B+H site and check the Oben Tripod Line.
I am very pleased with mine. Very Good value and quality.
You will pay closer to the high end of your range...but you should be happy.
My personal choice is Manfrotto. Solid as a rock. For your budget, you will probably need to go with aluminum, not carbon fiber. Also, use a rule of thumb of 1.5 times the weight of everything you attach to the tripod, including the flash unit.

You will not be able to get a very good tripod with head for what you are willing to spend. If you check the RRS site, you will most likely be gasping for air as everything on there is professional grade. There has been so much on here on tripods lately you might want to do a search. With the information you've given us, a recommendation is not possible. here's what I'd do if I were you. Contact MTShooter at his store CameraCottage.com. Give him a call. Not only is he a tripod expert, in my opinion, but he is a regular here and will give you great advice. He has lots of good tripods and a large supply of used, which might suit you better given your budget. You already have a really bad one. Don't waste more money getting another poor tripod. Just my $ .02. Good luck, Happy Holidays.

I'd guess that WalMart wouldn't carry the "proper" Manfrotto tripods, those allowing changing the head, etc. Go to a "real" camera store, if you can find one! :)

Used is another option. There's little to go wrong with a tripod, and its condition is easily checked. KEH.com is a good possibility, as are B&H and Adorama. Do note that KEH often lists the legs and heads separately. Better a high-grade used tripod than a brand new POS that you'll want to replace in short order. :)
You are right on. I don't need another POS.
