For those who think bird photography, including birds in flight, require the latest and greatest equipment, I submit the following three images. While not National Geographic quality by a long shot, these three are not bad, especially considering they were taken with my "barn rig", a circa 2003 Pentax 6mp K100d with more than 35k clicks, and a Quantaray 400mm preset bought from Ebay for $.99 plus postage. I use AV mode, with the lens wide open at f6.3, letting the camera set ISO and shutter. If the light is dim I raise the ISO from 200-400 to 800, but other than that, just fire away. Good focus is sometimes an issue, especially in flight, but the camera still gives me a focus confirmation beep, and of course the Pentax has IS with any lens.

Very nice I am getting a tattoo of eagles head next week.
gorgeous shots....I'd say your rig is quite good.
The shots are great. But there is no reason they would not be.
You bought the lens for .99 cents? That is a great buy.

Great shots you proved your point you don't have to have the top of the line gear to take great pictures you just
have to know how to get the best out of what you have.
congratulation's on your high quality shots.
After reading the title I was expecting to see pictures taken with a film camera. Nice pictures.
These are pretty darn nifty eagle shots wteffey. It proves the adage perfectly, "It's NOT the equipment, it's the photographer who creates good images." These photos are evidence of that.

those are wonderful pictures and point well taken, much can be achieved when one understand's their equipment. nice lesson for those of us that can not afford more expensive equipment.

What we sometime forget is that our constant chatter about the "right" great gear for a given situation is based on the equipment currently available.
I, for one, do not mean to be intentionally dismissive of older bodies and lenses. I still have a few in service myself (D2Hs, D1x).
Images like those above, taken with good quality but dated gear, that still functions well, especially when used with the obvious skill shown here makes that older gear viable and valuable.
Press on.
